For people who need good bt client

Well,he need to work somewhere or he is obligated to spend all his time working on a free app:rolleyes:
The guy already has a fine contract with a software group, and he is working there fulltime- in case you didn't know... So no, he definitely isn't starving.
He's working on μTorrent at his free time, and he is bloody free to do whatever he likes, but definitely not claiming that he did not know that he handshaked with an anti-P2P shark (or rather, THE anti-P2P shark in EU territory)... this is downright ridiculous, unless he is a total moron (which I strongly doubt).

So, he either must open the source or stop any further development of his little gem.
At the moment, it's quite safe to use the latest beta, eh? :)

There is nothing he "should" do- up to now he claimed he won't open the program source, but noone will blame him for inconsistency if he does.
And yep, I can assume the latest beta is "safe", but I won't sware on that... after all I went back to the overfed frog, not because uTorrent was "suspect", but because its upload performance after 1.3.0 was well below par.

--- 2006-03-07: Version 1.4.2-beta (build 435)
- Change: Rearranged settings dialog
- Feature: Setting to determine the number of µTorrent users.

:)

Read a few bits in UT and Sylk, not convinced either way, other than that the client is potentially discredited, even more so than by incorrect assumptions that the DHT was misapplied to private torrents in the same way as BitComet.

Has the guy "sold his soul to the enforcers", or just sold them a wrapped up DLL. The whole point of bittorrent, is that the protocol itself is as neutral as HTTP or FTP, unlike many other P2P applications which are clearly "here's what I have" than collaborative distribution.

µTorrent is not associated with any anti-P2P organization
Official Statement.
http://www.utorrent.com/#notice

Recently, µTorrent has been the subject of numerous articles as a result of the contract between µTorrent's sole creator and developer, Ludvig Strigeus ("ludde"), and PeerFactor.

While PeerFactor has been involved in anti-P2P activities in the past, there is a large amount of misinformation being spread about µTorrent, PeerFactor and the nature of the agreement.

No change has been made to µTorrent as a result of the contract, and no changes will be made in the future. µTorrent contains no anti-P2P component, IP logging or other monitoring as falsely reported by some websites, and is not affiliated with the RIAA or MPAA.
PeerFactor is no longer associated with RetSpan, and furthermore, Ludvig is in no way affiliated with RetSpan. Ludvig does not "work for RetSpan", nor does he work for PeerFactor.
PeerFactor is a new company, started by former PeerFactor employees who did not like the anti-P2P idea. They broke off to form a new pro-P2P company called PeerFactor SARL. This is the company that Ludvig is dealing with, NOT the anti-P2P PeerFactor.
The PeerFactor software that Ludvig is associated with is not anti-P2P software, unlike the PeerFactor program run by RetSpan in 2004, now discontinued. The head of PeerFactor states that "we do not distribute any fake file over P2P, but only useful content" (source).
The PeerFactor agreement does not give PeerFactor access to µTorrent's source code. The only work done by Ludvig for PeerFactor consisted of the development of a single DLL which provides an implementation of BitTorrent for the PeerFactor software. Ludvig is not involved in the development of any other part of PeerFactor.
PeerFactor's software is going to be used to create a legal downloading service for webmasters to distribute large content more easily, as specified in the contract, nothing else.
Ludvig remains the only person with access to µTorrent's source code. µTorrent remains closed-source to prevent clones and modifications such as DHT hacks, not to conceal anti-P2P code. µTorrent will not become open-source as a result of the controversy over the agreement.

Please refrain from spreading misinformation about µTorrent. Should you have further concerns about the integrity of the program, please raise them in the µTorrent community forums.
:)

Bitcomet is banned (so I hear) from most private trackers.

UTorrent has a DHT implementation, which apparently does honour the "private" flag, though I believe it may be banned from some private trackers.

If all you need is downloading from public trackers, then 1.6 is simply perfect.
If you are in some private, ratio based private trackers as well, then you'd better search for something else: uTorrent does a very bad job in autocueing torrents with few seeders/many seeders (factly, it never displays properly the seeders+leechers available on queed seeds).
I used it exclusively for almost a couple of months, and then went pack to the frog, which is the only client that can autoseed torrents properly. I just had to sacrifice some 45M of my RAM, but this is little investment compared to the danger of getting banned from my fav private trackers due to poor ratio!

µTorrent and BitTorrent Join Forces

+++++

This is Bram Cohen, the creator of the BitTorrent protocol, and Ludvig (Ludde) Strigeus, the writer of µTorrent.

Together, we are pleased to announce that BitTorrent, Inc. and µTorrent AB have decided to join forces. BitTorrent has acquired µTorrent as it recognized the merits of µTorrent's exceptionally well-written codebase and robust user community. Bringing together µTorrent's efficient implementation and compelling UI with BitTorrent's expertise in networking protocols will significantly benefit the community with what we envision will be the best BitTorrent client.

What does this mean for the µTorrent community? Not much, at least not at first. The intention is to maintain the website as it is, and keep the forums and community active. Moving forward behind the scenes, we will continue to develop µTorrent and will be using the codebase in other applications, especially ones where a fast, lightweight implementation is more suitable, such as embedded systems on TVs, cell phones, and other non-PC platforms.

The existent µTorrent and BitTorrent communities are immensely valuable to us, which is why we are announcing this here first to make sure you're all the first to know about the news. The plan is to continue to foster the health and growth of the community that has been critical to the success of µTorrent. Thank you in advance for your support.

Bram and Ludde

Not sure this is a good thing at all.

Bittorrent (official) has agendas which so not play well with the open & free style of bittorrent as a content-neutral protocol.

Mind you, there was a period of considerable unease at uTorrent's dealings with peerfactor, and it settled, this will probably settle as well.... I guess there's always azureus open source, if uneasy about the direction that Bram is choosing to take the "official bitorrent", even if it becomes necessary to fork.

Havent made my mind up as of yet.
Its evolution and that is often neither good nor bad and it usually hurts ;)
I guess we will see.

I havent used azureus for a good while and havent tested the v3.
Many will have it as the same client with a search engine on top.
