Major Probs with new Liteon DVD Writer

Got a dvd writer last week. didnt get it working at all. PC shop installed it. just got it back from them for 2nd time and still not working. they asked me to restore pc to factory settings as this helps somtimes. didnt work.

i have tried burning with nero 6 and sonic - my dvd (supplied with drive). and 2 diff types of dvd discs (i can use any blank dvd i was told in this drive)

on nero i get a comunication error and sonic i get unknown device error, please check on device.

When i open files on the drive it seems to crash after about 30 seconds. i got a song playing thru win media player for about 20 seconds then said i had a i/o device error

the drive has been replaced with another one identical and it was the same problems, the drives have been put in other machines and work so it is a problem with my pc.

For some reason i dont have apsi drives on my pc so downloaded ones for win 95/98/200 etc.
I have xp on pc but couldnt get the ones for xp working. The checker from adaptec sayd they r workin ok. can still use my cd/rw fine.

anyone got any ideas?

Cheers in advance
Lou.

thanks for the welcome :) have done the xp aspi now. adaptec check sayd workin, nero saying they r corrupted in the system info section within tools.

Im using the adaptec ones (from adaptec website) have to put .....
In the command box, add a space and either XP32 for Pentium I/II/III/IV processors or XP64 for Itanium processors. The command should look like: c:\adaptec\aspi\install.bat XP32 or c:\adaptec\aspi\install.bat XP64.

i have AMD athlon processor so didnt know which ones to do so did em both.

Ill keep battling away and checkin on here b4 i crack up with this PC

What chipset/ide drivers are you using??

what what?? sorry dont know. how and where do i find out. thanks
Lou

Rightclick "my computer" icon on your desktop, select properties, select the tab "hardware" and then "device manager".
You will get a list where you find a lot of stuff that's on your computer.....expand "ide ata/atapi controllers" from that list and post the information here..

i did that, i got 3 things, primary and secondary IDE chan and via bus master ide chan

in each of them is a box with 4 tabs general, advanced, driver, rescources.

i get
driver provider Microsoft
driver date 01/07/2001
driver version 5.1.2600.1106
driver signer Microsoft Windows XP Publisher
on the primary and secondary thing and on tehe via bus thing i get
5.1.3597.0 as the driver version.

if theats on what you need you will have to spell it out for me lol

Lou

Uninstall the Via drivers and replace them by XP's own version...you can do that by selecting the driver's properties,"update driver "and choose the option to display the list with all known drivers, you get a tab with all compatible drivers, choose "standard ide controller" instead of a Via driver and update, then reboot your system.

still no joy. i have attached a nero report. it keeps saying comunication error when it goes to write to the dvd.

i downloaded the drivers in the above message and before that changed the driver (via bus one)

when i do adaptec check the aspi r ok and working but when i check nero they r corrupted according to thier tools bit.

Lou.

ps thanks for the help so far.

Do you have problems with both drives ?

LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-851S D: CDRom0
HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4120 E: CDRom1

Did you check your master/slave configuration ?

If you put two devices to an ide-channel then you have to set one device as a master and the second as a slave.

At the back of your drives you will find some jumbers for these settings.
Normaly there is a sticker or something similar nearby to tell you how to make the settings.

In your case i would set the liteon as a master and the 4120 as a slave.

erm oh crap i need to get in the back of the computer! cant say i ever done it b4. better go hunt some tools out to open the darn thing. will be back providing i dont blow it up.
