maby u need to turn on DMA for your dvd rom drive !?

search the forum for dma and read the articles how to turn it on :)

try this one http://cdrbase.com/showthread.php?threadid=18268&highlight=dma+enable :)

Hiya,

Thanks for that, but there is no DMA option there -

On the properties tab it says,

cd player volume
and
digital cd playback - and a thing to tick which says edable digital
CD audio for this CD-ROM device.

Why what version is it on the link where I downloaded it?

When U go 2 the Winamp site, it's version 3 U get unless U click the big 2 in the right hand corner

If it runs ok on U machine, then don't worry, i just found it prone 2 crashin

2 enable DMA on XP, just right click on My Computer & select Manage, this will open the Computer Management Console, just look down the list on the left hand pane till U find Device Manager then click it, this will open Device Manager in the right hand pane

Just look 4 the entry that says IDE Contollers, there should be 3 entries wehn U click the little plus sign

Just double click on Primary IDE Controller & then the advanced tab & U will find the DMA options there, if it says it usin PIO, then just use the little dropdown box 2 change it 2 DMA If Available

Then just do the same with the Secondery IDE Controller, makin sure U apply it, then close all windows & then restart the PC

Ideally U want 2 enable it 4 the hard drive & also the DVD drive, this should stop the jerky picture & sound:)

Thanks very much Banzi :)

When I tried to do that, it already said use DMA - I don't remember doing that, so it must have been like that when I bough it.

So it is already usin DMA mode?!?!?!?!?!

Sometimes XP will disable that settin if it think it will have probs, is it still makin that funny noise & are the discs still playin a bit jerky???

BaNzI:D

PS did it say it was usin DMA 4 the 2 IDE controlers or just the 1???

Hiya Banzi -

This is everything it says there under the advanced settings tab.

Device 0
Device type - this says auto detection but I'm unable to do anything with that.
Transfer Mode - DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode - Ultra DMA Mode 5

Device 1
Device type - this says auto detection (This is able to change to none if I scroll down)
Transfer Mode - DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode - Not applicable

Then OK or Cancel - thats all it says

Click Start>Run>Type in - msconfig>Click OK. Click Selective Startup. Click Startup "TAB" which is located in the top right of the window. Click Disable all. Click Services TAB and check "Hide All Microsoft services" Then uncheck all that are there. Click OK and RESTART. Try playing your dvd again. If it works then there was some program that was set to auto start and run in the background that was causing your problem. Reenable them one by one until you find which one is causing the problem. If that doesn't work then your S.O.L. cause I can't help you. I would say that it serves you right for buying a dell but that would be mean and I'm a nice guy so I won't say that.
