You can now turn off your machine

Most people think it's a great thing that their computer turns off by itself. After you've chosen to shut down of course. I have never actually thought so much of this feature, cause I can only remember that it has been so since it was intruduced in Windows 98.

I was therefore surprised when I, after turning my computer off about an hour earlier, still could hear the fan's howling sound. I went back up to check on it. Turned on the monitor, and saw that f*ckin' screen where it said: "You can now turn off your computer". This has been buggin' my ass for a few days now. I've actually gotten quite used to just pressing the 'shut down' button, turning of my monitor/speakers, and go down to my livingroom, without even thinking about manually pressing the 'off' button. That's how it's done in my world. I seem to have been thrown back to '95.

This happened just after I reinstalled WinXP. I also installed SP1, which I haven't had before, and I wonder if that might be the reason of my sorrows. As I said I have never actually thought so much about this 'automatic shut down' feature, exept enjoying it's excistence, so I don't even got a clue on how to turn this on again. This is what I am hoping you could help me with.

Thanx

Try this ..

right click on the desktop go to properties/screen saver tab/power button/ apm tab and enable apm. this is what allows your computer to shutdown completely when you do a shutdown.

altho some mother boards do not support apm, or you may have problems with it restarting all the time ?! :(

Thanks for the tip. BUT I can't find no apc tab. Although I did find the company name 'American Power Conversion' under the UPS tab. Is apc an abbreviation of 'American Power Conversion'?

Anyway I ain't got a UPS, and there is no enable button below the UPS tab. I have got the Norwegian version of winxp, so it could be there is a difference between the english and norwegian version, or what do you think?

Check out this article concerning APM issues.

If i rem right, go 2 control panel & select Power option, then look 4 the apm tab & check enable apm

Then it should shut down completly

I have a Gateway 2000 running Win98se that read the same thing that I think your talking about "IT IS NOW SAFE TO SHUT YOUR COMPUTER OFF"?

to get rid of this and to directly shut down via that windoze shutdown button

enter Bios
power->ENABLE power management (will open up more options)
->DISABLE VESA video power down
this worked for me, but it's a old pc so your bios may be diff

Sorry.. my bios has no alternative like that.

It's strange.. Windows seems to be doing whatever it wants to. When I restarted to check out if I had this feature in my bios, windows suddenly played the 'logout theme/song', while I'm 100% sure that I have turned of all the annoying themes/songs at shutdown and startup.. Wonder if SP1 is f*cking up my system, maybe I should try to reinstall xp without SP1, or at least uninstall it. Damn it, can't B*ll Ga*es do anything right?

If your mother supports ACPI you should enable this in the bios and then install windows if this option wasn´t enabled before the instalation then windows is not capable to detect the proper driver for this function and it cannot be enabled after.

If can´t find APM in your bios then look for ACPI.

there is an option to enabel both ACPI and APM in my bios. They're both enabled, and has always been. This problem really occured after I installed SP1. But since I'd rather keep SP1, I would try to find out if there's something I can do about it, before possibly removing SP1.

This should work:
(from Amdmb_com Forums :) )

"Changing to a Standard PC HAL will give you the "It is now safe to turn-off your computer" and the PC won't shut down automatically anymore. So here is how you fix that, after fresh installing Win XP WITHOUT ACPI:
1) You need to enable NT APM/Legacy Support manually by going to Device Manager. Go to view, choose show hidden devices.
2) Click NT APM/Legacy Support, then double click NT APM/Legacy Interface Node......Under Device Usage, choose Use this Device (Enable)......then press OK.
Now it will shutdwon automatically.

If you have installed Win XP with ACPI ENABLED, here's how to DISABLE it:
1) Open up Device Manager...
2) Go to view... show hidden devices.
3) Open up Non-Plug and Play Devices... Find Microsoft ACPI Driver... DON’T disable or uninstall it, because that doesn’t work.
4) Go into Properties... then driver.... there is a pull down menu to tell windows when to start this driver...
5) Set it Disabled.... and then reboot
6) Now go back into it.... the driver will still be there and that’s ok... go back into properties and where it says status make sure it says Unavailable.
7) After that you need to install a new driver... manually by using "Add/Remove Hardware". Go in and add NT APM/Legacy Support...
8) It will install something called NT APM/Legacy Interface Node....
9) Reboot and everything should be working fine.
10) Do not forget to put thick on the APM in Power Management. This way when you shut down, it will do it automatically."

@ weboneando

you can install ACPI without a reinstall :D

BTW this was from a thread about resolving slow restart /shutdown in XP and the answer was to disable ACPI. I have ACPI disabled and my puter auto shutdowns OK so you only need to follow the first para to enable auto shutdown.

if DrStrange suggestion dose'nt work you may whan to try a flash(update) your bios, BUT ONLY IF YOUR SURE OF WHAT YOUR DOING, as you may screw the whole thing(PC) up, if you do it(flashing) wrong.

It's also very strange that when in your setup mode(cmos) that windows could play a theme. may be your in the wrong place?

on startup (before windows starts) press del or f1 to enter cmos then do as has been suggested
just a thought (you probally already figured that out)

I flashed the newest bios version about a week ago, when I reinstalled windows...

windows didn't play a theme in cmos... but when I came into windows... it's not suppose to 'cause I always turn the 'start' / 'shutdown' tunes off..

I haven't been able to test 'DrStrange's suggestion because I've been busy with my exam. But I'll try this after I finish my exam tomorrow.

I reinstalled winxp and done some experiments, and I no longer have this problem. One thing I think I will do is to obtain Norton Ghost, so I can greate a restore point when I feel my system is running fine, and with all the settings set the way I want. 'Cause the one thing I hate the most, is to set all the settings the way I like it after reinstalling windows ...

By the way. I finished my math exam at friday, and got an 'A'... Damn that makes my happy

Thanx for all help
