trouble with sound

Go to the bios and switch off all unused features like Lan,com1,com2, perhaps usb..so you can get some free interrupts.

When you are using an extra soundcard then switch off the onboard sound. !!!

also, she said that the primary HD is really hot, kinda unusually hot, so may be that's a bad HD?? she will run a diagnostics on that 160 gigger and see if that might be the problem

she also switched the promise card to the other slot but still same problem with sound

Turn your virusscanner and any other monitoring software off and install other drivers for your Promise card...

oh, regarding irq's she said that windows wont allow her to change irqs b/c it takes over ; is that true? b/c i saw the same irq number for different processes and i thought that might be the problem of irq conflict

but the bios can change irq´s....some award bioses allow you to change them manually

and please try what roadworker told you

This is true,you can also change priority for the hardware that uses it,if the IRQ is shared......however,some IRQ's you can't change,for example,the ones assigned to your IDE connectors...

master, r u referring to his suggestion of turning off antivirus and other progrms and the com1, com2, thingy? she did that already yeah and is still working on it; so far, doesnt look promising tho

oh, about the athlon being hot ->hot HD, how come only 1 HD is very hot and not all 3 HD? is it b/c that one being the primary HD?

i'll tell her about manually changing the irq thingy; hopefully she knows how to do that

about the IRQs

IRQs can only be changed manually by setting up Windows as "Standard PC" not as "ACPI System"; (hitting F5 during setup start);

about your motherboard V6FP

i downloaded the manual "V6FPR1A.zip" http://210.201.178.73/manual/V6FPR1A.ZIP,
chinese traditional looks always amusing but I can't read it; :(

http://www.jetway.com.tw/evisn/product/amd/V6FU/v6FU.htm
no C-Media chip is mentioned but VIA's southbridge VT8235;
VT8235 includes an AC97 sound chip; (see there: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=69)

about the Promise Controller ("Maxtor PCI card")

i can't read the manual, so i can't see the hardwarebounded IRQ allocation table of your motherboard; but mostly the middlest PCI slot is the one which have it's own resources, so it's recommended to place the Promise Controller there;

it's me again

... And she originally connected the 160 hd to the mobo directly, but it couldn 't see the full 160 gig, so she reconnected the hd to the pci card (or whatever card that came along with the maxtor HD) and now i could see the full 160 gig. ...

... i bought a new separate soundcard and still have the same problem. ...
now i can remember this thread where you never ever tried to install the propper IDE and chipset drivers (both included in VIA Hyperion)

so my idea is now:
dump out the Promise card, because it eats lots of resources; your chipset is able to handle large HDDs, but you have to install the needed drivers first;

Schedule:
1. wait for additional advises and warnings from other forum members about my theory
2. install the VIA Hyperion drivers;
3. uninstall your soundcard(s) in the device manager, don't reboot;
4. uninstall the Promise Controller (listet as SCSI) in the device manager, don't reboot;
5. Shut down your PC, plug out the power supply cord;
6. plug out your additional soundcard;
7. plug out the Promise controller;
8. connect your HDD directly to the mainboard in same configuration like before (eg Primary/Master)
9. start the PC
10. install VIA's sound drivers (link in my posting above)

I saw you are back in our forum. Problem solved? What was the solution? We are always interested in feedback.

hi duracell,

thanks for checking up; i really am very sorry for not posting back the status and more importantly thanking u guys for the efforts esp. master for even helping me on icq!! very rude and inconsiderate of me!!! plus, it's weird that i didnt get emailnotification about some of your previous posts regarding this problem.

Anyway, my consultant couldnt figure it out so she took it to her friend's shop who is more techy i guess; she took out the 160 gig hot HD and borrowed a 120 gig HD from him and connected it directly to the motherboard instead of through the pci card; that solved the problem of the weird errrrrrr sound that roadworker used to have, but it still gave me the blue screen of death when i played mp3's, however.

So she bought me a new sep. soundcard and installed it a few days ago instead of using the one on the mobo (which she did before with the 160 gig but still didnt solve it) and it seems to be problem free consistently so far - no weird sound or no bsods!! I am very glad and so is she b/c if this soundcard thingy doesnt work, she'd have to put in a new mobo to see if it's defective somehow.

So now I bought the 120 gig HD from her and got a brand new replacement 160 gig HD from maxtor as an additional HD; it cost a little bit more but I want it to work finally.

So there 's the long winded story :) i guess the culprit could be the combination of bad HD and bad drivers :)
