trouble with sound

i just had someone build a new computer with the soundcard built on with the motherboard;and i have had trouble with the sound since the beginning; and i m not sure whether it's a conflict in device or programs or what not or it's a defective motherboard; evertime i start playing a song, it has a dragging stuttering sound as well as whenever i change the volume or touch the keyboard or mouse etc.....

has anyone had this kinda problem before?

try to download and install the latest soundchip drivers from chipset fabricator's hompepage;
for this you have to know what chipset and soundchip is mounted on the motherboard;

this is just an example:
motherboard = ASUS A7V8X
chipset = VIA KT400A
soundchip = VIA Six Trac

Yes popping/studdering sound is a known problem with some chipsets and sound cards. It is usually fixable with the latest or correct drivers.

As the guys have said.... letting us know what Mobo you have and what operating system you are using will help us to diagnose your problem better. ;)

ok, i dont know what the brand of the mobo is but it's brand new and here's the info i extract from computer management console ( im on windows 2000)

see if any of the stats listed here tell u about the motherboard

Greetings from
Duracell

for a board with VIA chipset you always should install:
1. chipset drivers (VIA Hyperion drivers)
3. USB filter drivers
2. VGA drivers (if onboard VGA)
4. Audio Device Drivers (if onboard sound)
5. networking drivers (if LAN onboard)

Taken from your listing:

0xDC00-0xDCFF C-Media AC97 Audio Device OK

Duracell referred to this already but his link to the audio drivers were not really correct.

Try the hyperion drivers and the c-media soundchip driver...should work

the link for drivers is above...please read again ;)

For the hyperion drivers...hmm never saw this before but try to start the setup.exe within the temp folder.

Or try to extract them to something like c:/temp

never saw this error;
try to extract the hyperion manually first, clear your temp folders and then run setup.exe;

about usb filter, do i have to reboot first before i install that?
it can not harm;

can u help me more with the vga drivers
they are only needed if you have not a plugged PCI or AGP graphic card;

i dont think i need to update networking drivers 'cause im on a lan and i havent had any trouble with it yet.
you are right, don't fix it if it isn't broken;

about the audio drivers i'm not sure anymore; :confused:

Isn't the C-Media AC97 integrated in VIA's southbridge? :confused:
i thought it is the same like VIA's AC97, but I'm not sure about;

I am not sure too but i dont thing so. The most manufactureres are using mostly an ALC650 (Realtek) together with the Via chipset.

For my onboard sound solution i had to use the realtek drivers but the sound was awfull...i am using a soundcard with a c-media chipset now.
