Rebooting Problem!

:confused: I hope someone can help me! I have no idea what the problem is.. almost every time I try using nero to burn a cd it reboots my computer. It sometimes happens during burning, sometimes before it even starts to burn. It's really annoying me! Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Most probably a driver conflict, causing a minidump, although some older Nero builds did that thing when a dodgy serial was used.
What other burning programs are installed?

As per scarecrow please

The only other burning program I can see on here is "Write DVD!" which I dont use. My younger sister sometimes uses Windows Media Player to copy songs onto cd's too.

it doesn matter if you use it or not, it may have installed conflicting drivers anyway;

1. it would be helpful to disable "Automatic Restart": right click at My Computer > properties > enlarged > start and restoring (i'm not sure about the english terms)
so you will get a BSOD instead of a reboot; in the first three lines of the BSOD the trouble causing driver/software is named;

2.
disable IMAPI: http://www.dvdrbase.com/showthread.php?t=32137

3. uninstall Nero and "Write DVD", reboot;

4. download and apply Ahead's Clean Pack: http://www.ahead.de/en/631938356417810.html

5. reinstall Nero, reboot;

6. update Nero to the latest free version: http://www.ahead.de/en/updates.html , reboot;

7. do a test burn with Nero and attach the Nero log file here, so we can look for conflicting drivers; the Nero log file is called "NeroHistory.log" and is stored in the Nero program folder; when posting the file please delete out your Nero serial number;

"Write DVD" is a typical, Mount Rainier enabled packet writer which may conflict with many burning applications, no matter if you "use" it or not- it's always active in the background.

Ok I did everything that you suggested, I double clicked Nero StartSmart then chose Nero Burning Rom and my computer shut down. I got a blue screen with the following ..

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

BAD_POOL_HEADER

If this is the first time you've seent his stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardwarr or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

Techincial Information:
***STOP: 0x00000019(0x00000020,0x8537E948,0x8537E9F8,0x14160005)

Physical memory dump complete
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance. "

What the??!!

I shut down all my background tasks and tried 4 times to try and burn a disk and it doesnt get far enough into the program to create a log! Just keeps shutting down and giving me the same blue screen.

so i recommend you to uninstall XP SP2, then try it again;
as scarecrow confirmed it seems SP2 is mostly guilty for that type of BSOD;

First, the driver that gives you the blue screen is the Creative Hardware Abstract Layer Driver- typical rubbish driver made by Crapative, and one of the main reasons I don't touch Creative cards even with a thirty yard pole. Try installing a newer driver for your soundcard.
Second, remove ASPI 4.71 and put in 4.60.1019 or 1021.
Third, see what happens if you remove RecordNow (or whatever Sonic program that is).
Fourth, you have set your burner as slave to a DVD-ROM master, which is a bad idea. Put the burner as master, and the DVD-ROM as slave.

ok.. where do I get a newer sound card driver? What is ASPI and how do I put a different version? And yeh.. how do I put the burner as master and the dvd rom as slave? Im a novice!

OK, I will try to answer all those questions one by one.
1. Creative drivers: I guess at www.creative.com but don't take it for granted... their customer support sucks THAT much. Putting aside the official Creative drivers there are unofficial, unsigned ones at Sourceforge which are pretty stable, but they aren't good at all for gaming- so it's up to you if you will use them or not.
2. ASPI: The link given above is fine, but ForceASPI 1.7 does not unstall 4.7X in an 100% clean way. So, better first grab ForceASPI 1.8 ( http://members.fortunecity.com/forceaspi18/ ), use "killaspi" to remove what you've installed, reboot, and only then use ForceASPI 1.7 which installs 4.60.1021 by "instaspi" batch file (reboot again). Adaptec claims that 4.60.1021 is not good for XP, and 4.7X is the right one to use, but our experience here says just the opposite!
3. Removing RecordNow or Sonic-something is done the usual way, but for some reason the drivers are left behind! Use the attachment to COMPLETELY remove Prassi engine powered software (requires reboot). This is made by Sonic, but for some reason it was NEVER made public- plz don't ask me why, I'm not a Sonic affiliate...
4. Setting the burner as master and the DVD-ROM as slave is either extremely simple, or extremely fussy- take it as you feel it. You have to open the computer case, and set the burner back plate jumper to the "master" position, while setting the analogous jumper of the DVD-ROM to the "slave" position. If you use an 80-wire IDE cable you must also swap the IDE cable connectors between the two drives, if you use a 40-wire one this is not needed.

Ah, and finally, if the "troublemaker" is RecordNowMax or DX I would personally remove Nero instead, but it's just me...
