Norton Ghost And NTFS File System ?

Hello Folks,

Just installed Windows XP Pro on a computer.I am new to the NTFS file system. Purchase can you use Norton Ghost v7.5 to make a Ghost image of a hard disc that has been formatted to the NTFS file system?

Regards,
Coaster

My recommendation is Acronis TrueImage v6.0. I havent had the first minutes trouble with it! A much better app than Ghost by far!

if u're more used to ghost, stick 2 it...i prefer ghost than acronis, although some says acronis true image is better.

Hi i dont know bout acronis, but Ghost is capable to backup from/to ntfs partitions. so does powerquests DriveImage, wich both are pretty much the same, it's just a matter of taste what you want to use, programms are equally reliable from my experience.

Greetnx

Are the latests builds capable to backup to dvd?Ghost 2003 can, that's why I prefer it instead of Acronis...

Supported storage devices (disk image destinations):
hard disk drives
network drives
CD-R(W)
DVD-R(W), DVD+R(W)*
ZIP®, Jazz® and other removable media
IDE, SCSI, IEEE 1394 (FireWire), USB 1.0 / 2.0, PC card storage devices.
* — requires third-party DVD recording software installed.

Ghost has no problems with imaging any NTFS version- but notice it will NOT store images on NTFS partitions, which is very sensible: Windows "auto correct" NTFS filesystem problems, and those "problems" can be new files found- in short, you risk your externally stored files being deleted or corrupted. Or even worse, if the NTFS filesystem uses encryption or compression (both managed by OS) you simply risk ending up with a totally damaged filesystem.
Personally I also use Acronis (native support for ext2/3 and ReiserFS filesystems), but for plain Windows users Ghost may be a better solution. Also notice that both DriveImage and Acronis do have problems restoring (or even creating) spanned data images (don't ask me why- I don't know... it just happens!), while Ghost does not have this problem.
Notice also that I favour Ghost Enterprise 7.5 instead of 2003... cannot store directly to DVD media, no extX support, but it should be considered 101% reliable, while this does not apply for ver. 2003.

Disregard, soz, didn't read scarecrow's post closely enough..

Home use - Ghost 2003

Well worth the money, fine book sized manual too, clear and concise about the commands and switches to use.. also comes with Gdisk, a handy partion creator, eraser, hide tool.

Shop around for a price on the boxed version of Ghost 2003, prices vary wildly..

Ohh 1st post in a while, hello all.

A version of Acronis has just been given away on covers of UK PC magazines, will come back with details..

Think I am right in saying that you cannot have two images of XP on system at the same time

So if you Ghost XP from one drive to another you must disconnect one before you boot up ? ;)

From my experience, you can have the other drive connected but why would you do that because they are practical identical. Just use a boot loader like XOSL and you can have it both way.

Now if only I can find a cheap price for True Image 6. I already spent $$ on DI.

@ scarecrow & sameoldstuff - to explain
I have 2 hard drives my old 8GB and my newer 40GB
I have installed XP Pro on the 8 along with all the main core of programs office, PSP, Via Voice and many more - all updated and clean
I Ghost this onto my 40 and use this to try out anything new and/or dubious once the 40 is full of rubbish I then Ghost the clean version on in a matter of minutes and start again :)

the article I read is here
http://www.infinisource.com/features/backup-windowsxp2.html
Which explains far better the original point I was trying to make :D

This article is absolutely irrelevant...
The procedure described there is NOT called cloning, but migration- and the Ghost manual describes fairly well how to cope with migration problems (usage of Microsoft's sysprep before imaging). Apparently that knowledgable lady did not bother to read the software manual before writing her educative article...
