"Focus or Tracking Error", not a drive speed or media problem. Please Help.

I have an Internal DVD +/- RW drive. It has worked fine, until all of a sudden it won't burn DVD's without giving a "focus or tracking error", I use Nero 6.3.0.3, but I've tried other programs as well, and nothing works. Like I said, it was working fine for months, and this just happened all of a sudden. The last think I did was try to burn a DVD with DVD Shrink.

It burns CD's and CD-RW's fine, just not DVD's. I have tried both DVD+R's and DVD+RW's, and I am using high quality media (Sony and Memorex). I also tried using slower burn speeds, and still get the error. I also upgraded the firmware. Nothing has worked. Is my drive broke? Does anyone know any way to fix this problem? My Hard Drive is very full (about 5 gb out of 80 left) could that have anything to do with it?

hi

My Drive and Operating System

Hi,
My drive is a MagicSpin 8x Dual format drive. My operating system is Windows XP Pro. If I need to give any more info, please let me know, I really want to fix this.

just because the drive was working fine before doesn't mean it's working fine now. a "focus or tracking error" sounds like it's hardware-related to me, although i have no specific knowledge of the error. you might want to try using the drive in another computer in order to see if it's functioning correctly.

Nero Log

Also, I forgot to add that when I do a Nero Simulation, it also says the same error. I notice a lot of people say that when they cant burn, their simulation still works fine...this is not the case for me. Mine gives a focus or tracking error even when i do a simulation. Also, here is the nero log from the simulation:

a Roxio burning engine and Adaptec's ASPI v4.71 are present; both are potential trouble makers;

How do I get rid of them?

I just tried the drive in my friends computer, and it worked fine...How do I uninstall the Adaptec drivers and engines? I don't have any Roxio/Adaptec programs installed anymore, the only burning programs I use are Nero, DVD Shrink, and DVD Decrypter...How do I uninstall those other drivers, and/or where/how do I get new ones?

Many ways, try that simple one:
www.feurio.com
(exhellent uncrippled shareware which installs no drivers, and its system diaagnoosis module can activate/deactivate various system drivers).
ASPI 4.7X wont necesarily harm, but anyway 4.60.1019 or 1021 is surely a better choice under any MS-OS, unless you have exotic SCSI hardware.

I did the ASPI thing, and still no luck. When I tried to remove the Cdraw thing, or whatever it is, My computer stopped recognizing either of my CD drives. I deactivated it using Feurio, and then My CD/DVD drives no longer were recognized. So I had to reactivate it. Did i miss something?

Thanks for all your help everyone, but it turns out it was a virus. I did a virus scan and it found like 3 viruses on my comp! So I did a clean install of windows, and now it works. I have one other small problem though. I tried to burn a video (mpeg 2) that I made with Ulead Video Studio 7, and it gave an error. Now everytime I try to use that disc in Nero, it gives "illegal disc" error. When I originally burned, I selected under advanced burner settings "format dvd+rw" option (which I have never selected before, but I thought it was the same as "erase rewritable disc", and since it wasnt blank, I selected it) I think that mught have something to do with it. I've tried erasing the disc with Nero, but it always get up to 100%, then says "Illegal Disc". Any thoughts on this? Its only this one DVD+RW disc. Is there some way in Nero or some other program to un-format a disc or something?

i don't believe a virus itself caused your burning problems; but anyway by formating/reinstalling you got rid of the conflicting burning driver too; :)

"formating" prepares your DVD+RW for packet writing in UDF format; when you want to burn a Video DVD or a plain Data DVD you don't need to format, erasing is enough;
but i don't think the format process causes your current problem; the disc is unfinished (burning process failed) so Nero cannot detect a valid TOC , so Nero don't know how to handle this media; you should give away this media to a friend, so he can try erasing in a different burner with a different burning software;
