Firewalls!

Woohoo! First poster =) lol
Ok, we all know about firewalls (most), but which to choose?
Am not going to make this one long, just going to post the 2 best I think out now (at this moment):

Sygate Personal Firewall Pro 5x
&
Kerio Personal Firewall 2.x

Try them out & compare. They will serve you better than ZAP 3.x & BlackIce deffender or Norton Personal Firewall, etc... .

PS
this topic is about software firewalls, not hardware which are generally better (though I would use both if you can)

Use Zonealarm but I have heard that my Windows XP has its own but anything by microsoft to stop hacker's gets knocked down in a day :)

t0ucan yes, winXP all have their own firewalls, but they mess up too many things on the PC with network connections. Not worth it (have mine disabled).

PS
Hope you're using ZAP 2.6x & not v3 (cause 3 has been tested here often & found to be the worst).

Okay :) How do I turn it off?

In XP... One way is to click on START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL/ NETWORK CONNECTIONS/ (highlight then right click, chose properties. Then chose the ADVANCED tab and uncheck ICF)

Hope this helps...

Why should I disable Microsoft's ICF?? I am using it with Sygate v5 and found no problem till date of any sorts.
Anyone of different opinion please explain the reason also.

Regards.

i use AtGuard 3.22 for a long time and it was for some time the best. i don't know how good it has been tested but i like it and didn't want to change to a new one.
.. just looked at some screenshots of kerio firewall and their user interface looks kinda similar to atguard but atguard has some ad-blocking and privacy features i couldn't see on the pics. but i like the idea of md5 checking of the applications

i have also use atguard 3.22 for a long time, and still do on my win2k pro installations. i've been using the built-in firewall for xp lately on xp and it seems to work pretty good. it shows up as complete stealth at grc.com's shields up. only problem is that some ftp sites it won't let me see a file listing or upload.

zonealarm pro is a good firewall but a major pain in the ass. try to uninstall it and you will most likely have to reinstall your os. i'm now using a gateway server at home running a linux gateway/firewall setup. it's the only way to go.

Woopieieie!!! my first post...

I'm a BlackICE person myself...
once it's installed and set up it runs smoothly...

:D :D :D

BlackICE

BlackICE is a very good Detection Intrusion Monitor but doesn't cut it when compared to the proper firewalls on the market.

Depending what mehod you prefer, Rules Based or Application Based, there are only a few contenders:

Sygate: Application Based Firewall - easy to setup, easy to understand and works exceptionally well. A great Firewall without too many headaches or learning curve.

Tiny/Kerio: Rules Based - very flexible, very powerful BUT if you don't know what you are doing with the rules you'll leave more holes than the average teabag :D
If configured correctly, it rates as one of the best out there.

BlackICE rulez for me

Well... I ain't no pro but BlackICE does the trick for me...
It may take two days to configure it properly but hey... like I said, ONCE it's installed and set up it runs smoothly and none of them so called hackers can get in... I have about 25 intruders each day... most of them wannabees or true amateurs who should better continue picking their nose... there's more secrets they're gonna dig up there.
A true hacker is like a true car thief no lock nor car alarm will stop him...
It's just, almost every sh!tty hacker isn't protected himself...
verry funny though, when I tag them...

cheers man,

and for them builders of this site, one advice:

never stop doing the excellent work ;)

But always remember this...

As good as BlackIce is, it does not detect any proggies/trojans etc dialing out from your PC. It only stops them getting in, so spyware on your PC in a prog you downloaded unaware can do what it likes m8. ;)

See w*w.grc.com for what Mr Steve Gibson says on all the firewalls on the market.

For me the likes of Sygate, Outpost & Kerio cannot be beat for all of the security features they boast. :)

AH-HAH!!!

But that's where you're wrong...

at least with version 3.5...
2.9 did indeed only check incoming but 3.5...
As I said ONCE it's installed and set up... and for v3.5 it takes about two days extra to fine-tune it but after that...

It checks incoming, outgoing and apps...

If you're not familiar with it, it can be a pain in the ass of course...
if it keeps bugging you each time you open word, ie or minesweeper...

but I think we can all conclude that BlackICE is the one for me!
;)

if it's working for you dolfijntje the way you like it, then no need to change anything. Enjoy it & maybe give some of the other a try to see if you like any of them better.
I myself like to test all from time to time, 'cause sometimes when a company wasn't too great before they can make good products, sometimes good products become bad.
Just have to test all from time to time to see which is keeping up with newer demands.
