if you don't want to use ur files in real dos mode (booted from a floppy) than i'd recommend using ntfs !
sure there is a way to change the filesystem:
partition magic can do it, or perhaps there is even a prog in winxp to do that. just do a search on partition magic in this board and you will surely find something

Yeb!! I agree. PQ7 is the best. Personally I use FAT32.

Functionality in PartitionMagic 7.0

Merge NTFS partitions
Support for Windows XP
Access and partition external USB drives
Undelete a deleted partition from rescue disks

Other Powerful Features:

Organize and protect the information on your hard drive
Easy, step-by-step wizards help you perform partitioning tasks
Preview the effects of partitioning your hard drive before implementing anything
Safely manage multiple operating systems
Convert from one file system or partition type to another without losing data
Supports FAT, FAT32, NTFS, and Linux ext2/Swap

PC enthusiasts have long understood the benefits hard drive partitioning. Dividing a hard drive into several partitions lets you efficiently organize operating systems, programs, and data. Until PowerQuest's PartitionMagic came along, modifying partitions was a difficult and time consuming task -- demanding that you back up your data, delete existing partitions, create and format new partitions, reinstall the operating system and finally, restoring the data (which hopefully wasn't destroyed along the way). And, if you wanted to modify your configuration, you had to repeat the entire lengthy process.

With exciting new functionality and an easy to use Windows interface, PartitionMagic 7.0 -- the world's most trusted partitioning program, -- now puts the benefits of hard-drive partitioning within the reach of everyone. You can create, resize, split, merge, delete, undelete, and convert partitions -- all without destroying data -- and it only takes just a few minutes!

File Systems can be changed without formatting the partition. Win 2000 has a built in command "convert" - I would assume that this is also available in XP.

Syntax is as follows:
"convert c: /fs:ntfs"

BTW, I don't believe you can convert BACK to FAT32 if it goes pear shaped. And remember, you do this at your own risk - don't come running to me if you lose everything ;)

Bertieg you mean, it's the same as Oldy said for 2000. In the command propt just writing "convert c: /fs:ntfs" is enough. Could you give me details and since Oldy has not warrantied the path, what would you say.?? thanks

Yes Oldy you can do it in XP

I've done it before it works okay.
Click Start , point to All Programs , point to Accessories , and then click Command Prompt .
At the command prompt, type the following, where drive letter is the drive that you want to convert:
convert drive letter : /fs:ntfs
For example, type the following command to convert drive E to NTFS:
convert e : /fs:ntfs

Got a question folks. The reason I'm still using FAT32 with XP is because I can always boot with a DOS floppy and do stuff in dos from the HD like copying, renaming, deleting files and running stuff from the HD but with Windows Command Console, it's pretty restricted. Would converting to NTFS v5.1 and then using something like NTFS DOS Professional from w*w.sysinternals.com actually give me the same functionality if the HD's are all NTFS as I did with FAT32. Anyone have the registered version of NTFS DOS Professional? Thanks.

thanks for the fast answer bertieg and Oldy, i got the point and will apply it to my computer at work...
