I believe I understand why renaming files won't work -- I may be wrong or have improper understanding, please correct me if I do:
v3.1.7.0 and earlier break VTS_01 and beyond down with naming that identifies MENU class items seperately when ripped in file mode with a split of CellId. It does not however identify or seperate out MENU class cells for VIDEO_TS.
v3.1.8.0 and higher appear to also seperate out the MENU class items when ripped in file mode with a split of CELLID for the VIDEO_TS.
Thus renaming might work if all the files fit into menu class or not as identified in the IFO and also appeared in the order that v3.1.7.0 and earlier would have listed them, but this is highly unlikely and would almost definately not work if the cells were mixed types. One would have to go through the IFO and check. A lot of time and manual work that is best left to tools.
This whole post is just my best guess based on observations of running both version of DVDDecrypter on a few discs with settings I believe are accurately reproducing the results required by DVDStripper.
