FREE, yes FREE Rival to DVD2one inside!!!

Wow! DVD SHRINK is a new 210kb prog that also rips the DVD too! Early reports are saying that it is every bit as good, if not better, as it's rivals.

Here's the SP:-

What is DVD Shrink :
DVD Shrink is software to backup DVD disks. You can use this software in conjunction with DVD burning software of your choice, to make a backup copy of any DVD video disk.

DVD Shrink does not burn DVDs! The output from DVD Shrink is saved as files on your hard drive, which you can then burn to a DVD-R using separate burning software, such as the software provided with your DVD-R drive.
Why Use DVD Shrink :
Most DVD titles are designed to prevent you from making copies.

The first preventative measure is encryption. Most DVD titles are encrypted, which prevents you from either copying them to your hard drive, or if you manage to do so, being able to play the resulting files. DVD Shrink overcomes this problem with built-in decryption algorithms.

The next problem is not so easy. Most DVD video titles are simply too large to fit, without modification, onto a single recordable DVD-R disk. DVD Shrink overcomes this problem by modifying or "shrinking" the data from your original DVD.

DVD Shrink provides two ways of shrinking your DVD disk. These are re-authoring and re-encoding. You can use one, or the other, or for maximum "shrinkage", both combined.

Last but not least, why use DVD Shrink? Because DVD Shrink is free!

Thanks Laz, great news will certainly give this one a go. BTW they seem to have an anti leech, so it's best to go through their Faq page. http://www.dvdr-digest.com/software/software.php?file=dvdshrink

I can spell trouble for them... Decss embedded in the program?
That needs some courage, or naivity...
LOL, you are surely 100% right about that. :D

Going by a lot of members over at Doom9 and other places this really does seem to be excellent software, unlike DVD2one you can omit different audio tracks etc when you do a 1:1 disc. The rip side of things is also reported to be working well and some users who have had problems with some 1:1 DVD backups using DVD2one are reporting total sucess with DVD Shrink.

Just gotta wait until some DVD's arrive tomorrow to try it myself now. :)

Just ripped a DVD-9 with it and used Juggler to make an image (I have no DVDR media curently), it fits easily on 4.7 media and works back on Alcohol emulator just great.
I have no great experience on DVD backups, but it definitely looks like a real gem. Unfortunately I don't think it will last for long if the Deccs is not removed- unless the author resides in a country where there are no legal issues- which is rather unlikely.
As far as I'm concerned, dull lads at DVD-backup, DVD2one and at Pinnacle should feel REALLY uneasy right now! This proggy puts their commercial stuff to shame.

LOL, we now have the definative answer to this from the horses mouth:-
Legal issues - actually I don't know where I stand with this software. I thought that perhaps, since I'm not making any profit, I might not get into any trouble. Am I being naive?
You need to ask that question? :D (Me thinks he is using the "play dumb" routine just in case here and I hope it pays off.)

He surely does... but unless the legal environment i his country protects him, he is already in deep s&%t. (unfortunately... his proggy is just SUPER). He'd rather ask mr. Johanssen BEFORE issuing his program.

yeah infamous 'DVD' jon still is not finished with they still want his BLOOD :( so what chance of surviving the wrath does the creator have ?!?! :p

Grab it while u can.
Anything that is free is worth having.
Altho claiming that a program is super without burning a dvd verges on ...........well u tell me?.
It may well be fantastic, but thats hardly a valid recommendation.

Good luck to the guy for releasing this program, I will certainly try it and give a relevant opinion.

Just burned two of my DVD-9's on the only media I have handy (Intenso/Prodisk 2X), again by making a .cdi image first and testing it (DRU-500). They work great both in my puter and in my neighbours standalone. They don't work in my standalone, because I don't have any... :p
