Can't seem to get Linux to work.....

I have searched this awesome forum, done research (a little) on Linux, read help files on installation, but still I cant seem to get linux to install.

I wan to use Acronis OS for the multi-os loader. No problem, it installed fine. I am using a Laptop with NO floppy, so I opt for the boot from CD-Rom option. No problem. Linux mandrake boots from CD, gives a few screens, press enter, etc, then says cant find the install CD. Well, it's right there, same spot it loaded from.

I switch to Gentoo.... 1 CD, has to be easier... not. It loads like the usual DOS "look" and then nothing. It is waiting for a command or something from me. No where in the install files does it say anything about what to do next. I agree I am a NEWBIE to Linux, but come on....

I guess I need to leave Linux for the smart, and not for the dumb like me. I was looking for an alternative to Winblows, and to tell you the truth, its too hard.

Can anyone help an extreme newbie?

You might want to try Red Hat. It seems to be a little more newbie friendly. I mean hell, it worked for me. If you do, use GRUB because not only does it look better, it seems to be more efficient when I boot. *Linux takes longer to boot and shutdown but there is no need to shutdown or reboot unless you wanna change O/S's... ;) * It really is a straight forward flavor of Linux. It is the only one I am familiar with though so I cannot comment on any others.

I also have never used Acronis.

The toughest part about Linux is understanding the file system. It is a bitch at times to remember and I will master it one day.

Thanks guys for all the info. I have also read that SuSE is a good OS, but it's like 6 CD's. I can't even begin to imagine what kind of information 6 CD's can provide. The place I use to download every Linux OS out there is:

hxxp://wXw.linuxiso.org

It has pretty much everything, and is easy to download from.

Im going to make the directories as mentioned, and go from there. Once again, another quality response to a newbie question.....thanks.

Suse Linux 8.0

I bought and installed SuSE 8.0 Personal (3cd's) I had to figure out dial-up etc. but succeeded without too many problems. It's running great and I find it a lot more user friendly than Redhat 7.2 which I also tried. Like you I'm completely new at Linux but I'm really getting real stuff done. (Iternet, e-mail, cd recording etc.) Give it a try!!! It's interface is very similar to Winblows.:p
