Everyone has variations in hardware and software they use, so your gonna get varied responses.
I have two comps with WinXP - but only have SP1 installed on one, the comp without SP1 is working fine - I still manage to get updates from windows update, and no real major probs. The comp with SP1 - likewise not had any of the problems people complained about when they tried SP1 (except 1, below) - could be lucky, but dont see any major benefit from having it installed, though it does address the vunerabilities outlined in the SP1 spec.
If you're worried about the vunerablities without SP1 - by all means try it - but its good that you decided to ghost backup first - just in case (cos dont rely on the system restore point thats created by SP1 when u install it - mines already screwed - already tried reverting back to pre SP1 - I simply cant, lucky i dont have any major problems with it yet).
