xp shut down problems

this just happened a few days ago. After I installed direct x 9.0c it hangs at every restart/shut down. I reinstalled a fresh copy of windows XP and it still does the same darn thing. I'm pretty sure it's not one of the software drivers causing the problem. I can shut down and restart perfectly in win98SE but XP is hanging all the time. If anyone has any similar scenerio and has fix something like this, please help me find a solution.

Its real hard to say what the problem can be, hardware issue , drivers etc.
But I would try install this patch from Microsoft I do believei its in SPI but away the file comes under the heading of “Restarting Windows XP” patch references is Q307274.
Also check out " Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 307274" http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307274 which may well provide you with a little help.
Sorry still using DirectX8 series. ;)

i've tried going to the windows update and I can't find that patch anywhere. If anyone can find a direct link or .exe of it, please let me know

Could not find it? Okay try this here
Key search @Micro are, Q307274 or Hotfix but the link above will do. Good luck. :)
