xp pro install problem

hi a friend of mine is currently having problems installing xp pro on a system he has made. when he boots from the cd to start installation everything is fine, he does a full format of the drive and begins installation.It gets as far as initalising then throws up an error "FATAL ERROR" an error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing.
setup failed to install the product catalougs.This is a fatal error.The setup log should contain more information.

and thats as far as he gets...
motherboard is a gigabyte board with a 950 duron pro
128meg of sdramm
13 gig hard drive
fx 440 graphics card

256 mb minimum acceptable to install xp without propblems. Willing to bet that would fix the problem.

XP should install with 128M of RAM, but the box would crawl.
192M or more should be considered as a must.
The reason of the failure is most likely an I/O error, which may be due to many things, including bad installation disk or CD-ROM reader.
