Since Xp 's arrival everyone has had time to play with it.

Now the question;
IS it worth it?

Is it THAT much of an improvement over Win 98SE or ME?
I hear a lot of improvements and ALSO A LOT of faults.
I have not put it on yet because Win 98SE has been so good for me.

I am curious if it is worth the trouble.
I have copies of XP Home, Pro and Corp.

Comments are welcomed.

I don't play many games. Just Burn and D/L

Intel 2.0 celeron
512 mb mem
2 40 gig HD
Sony DVDR
Plextor CDR
MSI GeForce3

XP is not the best OS available (call me 2000 or Unix/Linux), but in any case it's way preferrable to 9X/ME DOS fakes- both stability and functionality-wise.
Using 2000SP2 (although SP4 faired fairly well to, unlike SP3), but since you may encounter many driver problems under 2000 (most current device drivers by vendor are XP optimized and do not work that well under 2000) you may try XP. SP1 is not much better than plain XP, but not worse either, so the included security patches cannot harm (errr... not sure about the latter, I just hope so- you can never be sure with Microshaft).
And yes, NTFS is ages ahead of FAT 32 regarding security, data recovery and stability.
For normal usage, prefer the home edition- most pro and corp. features (if not all) are not needed for regular users- in fact they install and run many useless services, which of course can be disabled, but I see no reason to get into that fuss.

I felt the same as you and ended up installing xp as a second os, just to try it. But as time went on I found I was using xp more and more. If you have the space why not try it.

i say win2k 4 1st choice, have less probs ,less crashes, except zat 2k takes longer 2 load than xp...& i find my internet connnection smoother on 2k than xp

I would say it is ages ahead of any Win9x/Me (especially Me) system. I would normally recommend win2K or XP for window based systems, but since most things new are geared towards latest things (as in drivers, support, software/hardware compatibility), I would now suggest for you to go to winXP (any version).
The others are basically getting phased out, along with support for them. MSN themselves no longer give support for win2K (2000) Service Pack 2 (I think even 3 *just support for SP4). Also win2K is more for power users, so I think most people will find winXP easier to use and configure.
*note: not that XP isn't for power users (once you use Pro/Corp versions), but it isn't as complicated to use as win2K. You really have to know your way around things in win2K if a technical problem comes up with driver/software/hardware

PS
Keep in mind that there will be a few different things and you got to adjust, but you'll pick up the new layout and inner workings quickly enough minus the constant BSOD lol

Windows XP Pro and Corporate versions are identical. It is just the registration code you enter which makes it Pro or Corporate.
XP_SP1 is far more reliable and steadfast than any other Windows I have tested. My basic rules to make it work properly. Prevent data damage from power line anomalies with an UPS. Use Ontrac Data Eraser and wipe the hard drive and pull out the mains power before and after using data eraser. Just in case some bugs survive in memory. Use matched good ram and a first class CDROM. Many cdroms may appear perfect but will not copy files 100%. And that is extremely important for XP. Ensure my hard drive and peripherals are in perfect condition.
I disable auto updates and update nothing for XP. I use Mailwasher and Firetrust Benign together with Norton Antivirus Professional 2003.
Result is no problems whatsoever.

If you want multi-user stuff and up to date stuff and other good stuff (i like stuff), then switch to XP. I like it but Windows Update on XP is dodgy (some updates make you need to use system restore because they mess it all up) which makes it hard to stay up to date with security patches.

Much more stable and supports far more hw than any previous Win product. It is after all, the next build of NT/2000 - ver 5.1. NT was 4.0, 2000 was 5.0, XP is 5.1. More recovery options like driver rollback, system restore, can run most apps back to the DOS era (set properties on the executables for compatibility).

bit upset when i downloaded heaps of abandonware games i used to play in the 80`s / 90`s and only half of them play cause xp aint got dos , some of them work with cmd but not all , not even my favourite of all time would work - skidmarks 2

Try browsing for the *.exe or *.com file for the games, r-click and go to Properties, Compatibility tab. Use the drop down box to force it as Run in Compatibility Mode ... and select Win95 or whatever. Win 95 was basically just DOS with a Window layer on it, so that may work. Forget running the games in 2000; there is no such support.

i really prefer win2k ...
i dont run a lot of games but all i did worked fine.
compatibility mode exists too, just right click a link to an app and activate it.
and for the real bad games there are real dos emulators like dosbox.
driver rollback is available too ... you just need to find all the shit. there are three driver states saved in the registry, you can disable any driver in the recovery console ...
system restore is missing ... but there are a lot similar progs for those who need it. i never needed, i could fix all probs on other ways.
the .1 in xp is just a added fat userinterface that for all the features 2k already has and just wastes resources.
for home users xp is fine ... if you want more use 2k
both are far more stable and flexible than 9x and me isnt even worth mentioning
forti

ps it just sux that the new adobe premiere pro only runs on xp :( im gonna kill these programers .....

Can't see a big improvement in Win Server 2003.
It's basically an improvement over win2K server, but if not running a server, there is no need to go to it, otherwise it maintains same functionality/stability as win2K BUT it is better than win9x/Me lol

I changed to XP Pro a month or so back from Win2000. When you finally get rid of all that fansy bright coloured interface and go back to the Traditional interface, it then runs a lot quicker and smoother. I have a mojor problem with its Windows Explorer though, it sorst folders differently, you cant 2 click in the left window to rename a folder, the little + and - folder symbols are regularly mixed up, sometimes you cant delete an AVI file, by hiting the DEL key (reports some other program is using it, thats crap) but the big X icon at top does delete it, or vice versa ! All to much for me, I wish I has 2000 back, just so much simpler and easier to use.

CM, that problem with deleting stuff takes a little time usually. Usually if you just viewed the file, or just downloaded it with something, it won't let you delete right away. You will have to wait a minute or so sometimes to be able to. It's an issue I hope they fix in some update. It can be annoying lol.
With everything it takes getting used to. After you are used to doing things in win2K it is combersome to do things in winXP, but eventually you get the hang of it. Both have their pros and cons. To this date I think win2K SP2 was the best but winXP has the focus of software developers so it is a needed change eventually I guess. Would be nice if some programmers make a new one on their own incorporating win2K & XP : win2P hahahaha.

PS
nobody post your spew about Macs, I don't like using them. They are for hair salons lol.

I made the transition to Win XP Pro from 98/Me a couple of months ago.I`m glad I did, though it seems a totally different animal to what I know.I`m slowly getting to grips with it though...

Thanks

Thanks for all the replies.
I have gotten a copy of XP Pro and it seems ok.
