XP home ed' slow shut down!!

Cheers for reading this thread.

Just an observation really and my comments about XP as compared to 98SE.

I use a dual boot on my system and can select either OS at start up.

My god, what the hell is XP playing at when it comes to shutting down or restarting??...it takes so f*cking long.

If I close down or restart 98SE it does it in a matter of seconds.

I don't think it's a case of problems with XP, as I have it installed on my laptop as well and it's the same thing, slow shut down/restart.

All that crap about XP being faster and sleeker. It's a good OS and seems pretty stable but I hate having to restart my system when I'm in XP. Thought things were meant to improve as they went along, I don't think an increase in the shut down time is an improvement!!

Think all that $$$$ must be sending Billy Gates a bit mad, I'll take some of it off his hands if he likes.

WRITING

Probably like WinMe writing the CACHE when shutting down and maybe MS spyware. Sometimes I shut down fast, others SLOW.

winXP is faster. The problem lies in the pagefiles & the fact that is is like winNT/2K allocating things into memory. So it must flush these things out before restarting/shutting down.
Startup is faster though & everything else tends to function better (but perhaps that's 'cause I know how to setup/tweak my system). It is better to have it shutdown/restart slower, but will properly (& allow you to fix things that crash) than for it to be a fast at restarting/shutting down I think.
Some tweaks will help the system shutdown within 10 seconds (but I don't recall it or where to get the tweaks. I'll look for it one day though).

I've attached a few helpful tips (zipped up) that you might consider doing.

DREEMTHEEF...WinXP is tested and proven to be much faster in startup than Win98 and WinME.

On a fresh install it starts and shuts down so fast, sometimes I think its not done yet. What I find slows WinXP down is all those TSR's. If there is a common software proggie that you have on both computers...this could be a slowing your windows down .

I'm also wondering what your computer specs on both computers as XP requires faster processors and memory to work fast and efficiently.

Also, follow the advice that Shadoe posted. Very good advice that should help. :)

Thanks for the advice

Thanks shadoe_phantom for the attachment, I'll probably give some of them a try. It doesn't bother me enough for it to be a worry or something I desperately need to sort out but on my systems XP is very slow when it comes to ending.

As for your comments dxkim....
On my laptop I don't have very many programs at all. The only two in common with my desktop are IncrediMail and WinZIP v8.1, as I only really use my laptop for mailing. The laptop is overall slower but I know that is because it's not a super powerful system. The laptop spec's are:

P11 @ 366Mhz with 128Mb Ram.

I'll be honest, the only reason I installed XP on the laptop was because I'd tried 98SE and Me, as well as loads of different modem drivers but the only way I could get my modem in the laptop to run at 56K (48K actually) was to use windows XP.
But as I don't use the laptop for much, just emails, surfin' stuff like that, I don't really care that it's a little bit slow.

My desktop system is okay with the running of XP. It's spec's are:

P111@866Mhz with 384Mb Ram.

I'll not list all the other things on my desktop computer, as they are relevant but XP runs just fine on this. I don't have that many applications running on my desktop system but I've actually timed shut down for both the lappy and desktop and it's just over 50 seconds. The shut down speed for 98SE is 6 seconds.

You guys are correct, it's probably something I've got running or the way I've got things set up. I don't run any of the fancy XP type graphics, I've turned them all off, preferring performance over appearance.

Oh yeah, the windows xp I used for installing is a 1:1 copy I made from an original CD and I used the SAD Team crack and I also used the Anti-Spy software, every box ticked in that one.

Thanks for the feedback, keep up the good work.

DREEMTHEEF...no Firewall, no AV software??
Ever try msconfig to see what else is running. There are usually printer utilities, photoshop, video driver utilities, sound driver utilities, CDRW drivers, MS Word or Office, etc. that load up without your approval. Just turn them off.

Your Home system will be fine with a few tweaks (the ones in Shadoe's attachment), but your Laptop is another story. Considering that Windows minimum spec. for WinXP is a PIII 300mhz and 128mb of RAM, you are not going to get good performance. Mind you this is a MINIMUM for WinXP to run...so your 333mhz laptop is going to have slow performance no matter how many treaks you so to it.

If you get tired of the slow performance...you can always go back to Win98. ;)
