xp from hell

My friend has just freshly installed dual boot 98se and xp and after couple days it restarted and says cant find HAL.dll file in sys.32 folder
when we get into the drives the partition where xp was is now showing full but when we explore it its empty, no hidden files, just nothing
its formatted fat32 on all
his just installed 160gig seagate drive and a seagate 80gig drive
he can not get xp to run its as if its gone, the whole partition
any ideas

My recommendations are try not to dual boot and avoid partitions....

has to dual boot because there is no drivers for saitek steering wheel for xp

I had a dual boot going with 98SE,and Xp.Gave up on it because of all the headaches.Just use XP now.So your answer was correct.

The bios should be checked for detecting the correct boot drive.The error could be from the system trying to boot from the wrong hard drive.Unfortunately it is quite common of a problem.

I have Dual XP & ME (rarely use ME though)
