UPDATED INFO 8 MAY: XBOX - PART 2:
The latest information and news and pictures about 4! xbox modchips can be read in our new topic: Xbox hack - part 2.
UPDATED INFO 8 MAY
7 may news at the bottom
According some anonymous sources we got through the news submit, it is possible to copy the games from Microsoft Xbox.
There was already floating an WMV (windows media video) file of 6mb (temporary offline) in which you can see someone taking out a just burned dvd-rw out of his computer and play it on his xbox. The date from this video if of April 18th. The image seems very convincing and nothing indicates that it is a modified video but it was doubtfull it was true since no other sources could confirm it worked because of the harddisc locks and region codes built in the xbox by Microsoft.
Though now as of 4th of April there are floating several X-box releases in the illegal "warez" scene. A piece of one of the hacked games for the X-box Shrek:
quote:
We tested this game on a developer XBOX, and it works. Since there is
no mod chip yet, we have no idea if this release will work on retail
XBOXes when/if a mod comes out. However, now that there is a release,
a modchip developer will be inclined to get our releases to work, so
we think a future mod will work with this release.
If a game is small enough to be burned to a CD, you can burn it to
either a CD or DVD, at your option, using the same ISO file.
The Xbox does not use media checks like the PS2.
When burning to a CD, if your CD burning program has an option,
choose "MODE1/2048", exactly as if you were burning a PC CD-ROM.
We recommend PrimoDVD for burning Xbox for both CD and DVD, but
all CD writing software besides Clone CD should work fine.
From our experience, the retail Xbox can only read DVD-RW's
and CD-RW's, so if you want to be sure that these will work
with a future mod, we recommend burning them to Rewritable
discs. We have heard reports of the retail Xbox reading some
types of DVD-R discs, but we have been unable to verify this.

The group who released it all goes by the name of ProjectX and have hacked these games already:

The releases differ in size from around 400mb upto 1500mb and are all in USA/NTSC format. According ProjectX it should work on every development xbox (which cost around the 20.000 - 30.000 dollar) but they think it should work on a normal xbox too but they didn't have a chance to test it yet. Because of the regional code it should only work on the retail x-box from the USA.
As soon as the wellknown "modchips" will be ready (they are not out there YET) the games should be playable on all region xbox machines. Early tests on european xbox show an "illegal media" error message. The wait is for some american xbox owners to test it and then we will know if it is true.
The next few days there will be updated news about the hacked xbox here on headliner.
Furthermore we would like to say that we only got this information from other sources and we have NOTHING to do with Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo and we do NOT own any of these consoles and we have NO IDEA where one can get these hacked versions. We are only a news source and will only spread news. Thank you.
UPDATE 06-06-2002 13:10 (GMT+1):

Fake releases of bootdiscs are floating around the web. There are no boot disks, and will not be any boot disks. the reasons for this are as follows:
in order to boot a game in a retail Xbox the cdrw/dvdrw must have SIGNED code. Seeing as hackers do not know howto emulate or write their own signed code, a boot disk cannot boot.
If hackers could write their own signed code, then a boot disk would not be neccessary because they could simply write the signed code to the releases.
When/if a modchip is made for the ability to play backup games, it will most likely modify something (maybe bios) so that the signed code requirement is no longer needed on Retail Xbox's.
There is supposed to be a working xbox modchip that was supposed to be shown at a gameshow in Manchester (the Neo-X modchip). More info's as they come along.
UPDATE 07-05-2002 02:05 (GMT+1):
There is a new movie released by the apparently original crew that released the 1st movie (see above). The 2nd movie can be downloaded here (37mb).
h**tp://w*w.xtender.info/xtender.rar
The following information is spread together with the movie:
quote:
Xtender crew are forced to release another video to confirm that the chip isn’t fake
We also want to point out that we are in no way affiliated to raptor or neo-x
Look out for the Xtender chip coming very soon from your local chip supplier
We would also like to mention project-x who in our opinion are super lame
Weve had games for weeks but were waiting on our chip manufacture being completed
So ppl could get chips and games at the same time.
Xtender crew are trans-european and live in Alaska, weve all got 5 eskimo wives and love to fuck, drink and smoke. Long live the snow ppl :>
Note u need Winrar v3 to unpack this....

So ANOTHER group with a somewhat more promising attempt to create a working modchip.
Also new info's from the Neo-x crew:
quote:
OK we're gonna update you on a few things. NEO-X all along has been able to play these backups released by Project-X. We just couldn't tell anyone until the releases went public. So to confirm yes they all play on a retail XBOX unit. It can boot all unsigned code and modified XBE's. We've used CDR / CDRW / DVDR / DVDRW, and you will also see DiVX, MP3, VCD Players soon as well as internet browsers, Linux tools and much much more. It's going to be an exciting year for all XBOX fans.
Now here's the bad news. Our situation has still not changed with regards to selling a full mod or even just the import only mod to the public, it just isn't worth the legal hassle. However i'm sure you'll see mods popping up from other companies who operate underground - the risk is just too high for us to pursue. It's been a lot of fun proving that it can be done though

So it IS possible, only who will be able to produce the chips?!?
