NEW YORK - You'll need a net worth of at least $12.4 billionto count yourself among the 20 richest people on the planet this year. That's $2.1 billion higher than last year, thanks to an improving global economy. The Top 20 is a diverse lot with nothing in common but a talent for building wealth--and keeping it. Among them: a Harvard dropout who founded software giant Microsoft; a Saudi prince with a $10 billion stake in Citigroup; a Hong Kong entrepreneur with businesses ranging from cell phones to shipping containers; and a Russian oligarch languishing in a Moscow prison. Americans dominate this list with 11 members, five of them heirs of Sam Walton, a small-town Arkansas retailer who founded Wal-Mart. These 20 individuals have a combined net worth of $413 billion, roughly four times the economic output of Singapore. While they make up only 3% of the 587 billionaires on our list, they account for 23% of the total billionaire wealth.
