WinDVD+DirectX corrupted Windows 2000 .... please advise.

I have Windows 2000 running on my computer. In order to install WinDVD I had to install DirectX first, hence I did.

After the DirectX + WinDVD installation it offered to reboot the system, in order to complete the installation, but that was it!!! The system never booted back completely after that. The OS booted up untill the point where the desktop icons started filling up and rebooted. This went on and on and on. The system did boot up in the safe mode and I tried to uninstall WinDVD + DirectX, but it didn't help.

I struggled with it for last 5 days and finally, yesterday, reinstalled Windows2000.

Is this a known problem and has anyone else experienced a similar issue?

Sorry, I didn't mean to double post. I came back to see if there were any replies and found the post missing. I posted it back only later to realize it was moved to the Troubleshooting section.

no probs.

as far as your question goes, most haven't had too big a problem with latest winDVD, though some have mentioned a few bugs.
Perhaps try using PowerDVD 4x for now till everyone clears the air for winDVD 4x.
Anyhow, good luck.

I haven't had any issues with Directx8.1 but DirectX 7 used to blow the crap out of my PC :)

I now use 2000, SP2, DX8.1 and it is very stable.

To save you a bit of time in the future, its a good idea to take a clone of "clean" fully installed O/S - then when this sort of thing happens you can reinstall the image. Saves hours of configuring :)

Have a look at Drive Image Pro or Ghost - both good apps.

Thanks for the wholesome replies guys!

SHADOE: I tried PowerDVD even before WINDVD. But it kept giving errors while reading Multiplexed PAL MPEGs and
PAL (S)VCDs . No clue how to make PAL videos work in PowerDVD.

OLDY: You are right, since the DirectX version I had installed was indeed 7.x. I did try the uninstall option, but the OS damage was already done.
