Windows Messenger Alerts

I am using Windows XP with a broadband internet connection so Windows Messenger is online most of the time. For the past 3 weeks or so... I have been getting annoying Messenger Service alerts appear on my screen. They have been varied up until the last few days and now it is the same alert but with slightly different info. I have attached an image below to show you guys what I mean. Can anyone PLEASE tell me how I can stop Windows Messenger from allowing these annoying pop ups to get through to my pc? Thanks.

...and btw, in case you were wondering... NO, I didn't subscribe to this service, despite what it says!

Zen and Johnny™ - thanks for your help. @Zen, I tried the msnpatch in the thread you mentioned, but I still get that picture above, although not as often. @Johnny™ - I really don't like Norton products but perhaps another adblocker may work just as well. Cheers

It's your Messenger Service , Not MSN which is guilty
you can turn it from automatic to manual or to disabled, with the service MMC.

--------
Messenger ~ sends messages between clients and servers. This service needs not to be running under normal "home" conditions. It is also advisable to make this service go away to avoid the possibility of "net send" messages hitting your computer from the internet. This has nothing to do with MSN Messenger, nor is it "WinPopUp".

To test for this security vulnerability, at the command prompt, (run: cmd.exe) type:

net send 127.0.0.1 hi

If you get a popup "hi" message, you should disable the Messenger service.
If you get an error stating, "The message alias could not be found on the network", you are safe.

If, for whatever reason, you need the Messenger service running but wish not to have spam popups active, you can disable the particular ports at your firewall. The Messenger service uses UDP ports 135, 137, and 138; TCP ports 135, 139, and 445.

Dependencies:

NetBIOS Interface
Plug and Play
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Workstation
