Hi, my brother in law often records onto DVD discs for me any software or music he may have but when I try to play it on my PC or on another DVD all I get is "Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrputed, or it may be using a format that is incompatiable with windows". Can anyone make a suggestion how I cn access these disks or what software I may need.

there is defo information on the disks as when I send them back to him they work fine :(

thx

Perhaps he leaves the track open, either with his burning app,or with his packetwriting software.....what program does he use to burn the discs???

Or he is recording them using pure UDF, without Joliet extensions. These disks are unreadable under Windows 9X/ME without first installing a third party UDF reader, or some 9X specific video DVD playback program (the latter also installs the missing UDF reader driver).

Can you recommend a good free udf reader that will read DVD's ?

Not using Windows 9X since ages, but I guess the typical Adaptec / Roxio UDF reader driver should do...
And yes, some old DVD-ROM drives read only -R media, and some old DVD burners just the opposite...
The link above is for the latest free UDF reader version which should do UDF 1.02 as well as UDF 1.5 ( packet writing ) and UDF 2.0 (DVD-RAM). If it doesn't install, shout back.

Oh, I almost forgot it, since it's not really needed for non-Windows 9X systems:
Using an alternative CD-ROM access layer, like ASPI would be quite helpful. Easiest way to obtain and install ASPI is ForceASPI 1.7 which is the most suitable for W9X systems (most likely for EVERY Windows OS).
