win2k pro computer loses network connection

hi,

i have a LAN at home with all computers running windows 2000 pro n connected via linksys router; 1 of the computers recently lost network connection (the internal ip reverted to 169.254.xxx.xxx instead of 192.168.x.x);

1/i have tried pinging the loopback ip 127.0.0.1 and it works but pinging the gateway address 192.168.1.1 doesnt work

2/ i tried connecting the ethernet cable to another computer n it still works so it's not the cable or the router

3/ i dl lspfix but i dont know how to run it; am i supposed to highlight the tcp/ip option and click to remove it?

4/ i tried uninstalling and reinstalling tcp/ip but no luck

i had the same problem before and i think it was related to sygate firewall but i performed the same procedure i had done before (which didn't work this time)

please help!

I had a similar problem and it was caused by a spyware or something like that, to solve it I installed spybot then run it and after that checked the workgroup name and changed it to match all other pcs in the network and then set the ip address.

Can´t tell if this could work for you but you won´t lose anything trying, hope that this help you.

Did you try the commands ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew ?

yes, i tried ipconfig /release as well as ipconfig /renew; ipconfig /renew says that it can't reach host server and /release says that it already is released.

i ran spybot s&d as well as adaware and it didnt find anything new; i'm very close to backing up the data files and reinstall win2k pro

Did you loose your connection after a Spybot run?
I know there are search bars and .newnet spywares that mess up your connection if they are removed directly by Spybot without uninstalling them first from control panel/software.
Restore a Spybot backup and see if you get your connection back...:

no, this is my roommate's computer and he said that the disconnection happend while he was web surfing

i also tried plugging it to a diff. port on the router, the green light is on on the router led indicating its presence, but when i go to access the dhcp client list from linksys's router page, it isnt on the dhcp client list; i thought i had seen it on the dhcp client list before when i had similar connectivity problem

This what I do when all else fails.
1, Shut down all pcs
2, Unplug router and modem
3, Wait a minute plug in modem and wait for all the lights to come on.
4, Plug in router and wait for all the lights to come on
5, Boot pc's
6, Hopefully your on the net
Hope that helps.

But I also think its a virus or sypware.

thanks u guys; i finally got it working after a lucky try; it IS related to sygate personal firewall; i uninstalled it via youruninstaller before but apparently it didnt get uninstalled completely and that the left over parts/services messed it up; so i thought may be if i reinstall sygate, that might fix it

well, the setup file for sygate is also the same button to UNINSTALL it; so when u click on it, it knows to install or uninstall from detection; and that fixed my problem; thank god ; i was about to reinstall win2k which is a pain to do reinstalling all the drivers all over again

never use 3rd party uninstaller in first instance;
use the software's own uninstall routine, reboot; then you can try a 3rd party uninstaller to dump leftover parts;

that's good advice duracell; i will keep that in mind; ijust had a habit of using tuneup utilities to uninstall stuff n never had serious problems until now so i def. will follow your advice.
