Which is best ?

I'm going to buy a DVD burner in the next week but am unsure which to get.

Is a DVD- best or DVD+.

I'm going to be backing up my DVD's and PS2 games.

Any help and advice please.

Welcome to the forum! The Sony 500A is the best current drive, but is pricey. It does both formats..Dvd-&Dvd+.The current trend is to create dual capable drives.

That said,The Pioneer A05 is a good economical choice. It only supports Dvd-r,but will probably outlast any changes to the formats war.Dvd-r media is also much cheaper in most places in the world. There firmware hacks out that make the Pioneer quite a good buy.Either drive will do what you need.

Use DVD-R is the best of all time. Setop DVD player will much less error playback on DVD-R media support. You wait for Pioneer A06. Both can support DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW format.

Cheers fellas for the advice

WOODY, what did u mean by -There firmware hacks out that make the Pioneer quite a good buy

ac3cd, followed your link and found it very interesting, cheers

There is a hacked firmware for the 105 which makes it burn 1x DVDR @ 2x <> it works well I have not burned at 1x since I flashed the burner!

Yes...the firmware hacks improve an already great burner.I have installed the 2X4 hack with 12X ripping.Works great. The A05/105 is locked at 2X ripping speed before the hack. This hack really makes thing better if you need to rip with the Pioneer.

I am also writing at 2X to 1X speed Princos.More information below.

1 thing to add.....if you buy the Pioneer,be shure that you still keep a decent cd-burner mounted in 1 of your bays, since the Pioneer (and it's Cendyne brother) have probs with burning cue/bin and has no DAO-RAW burning support,so a no-go for most cdr protections...

Yeah, the cdrw function of this drive is average at best.Agreed on having a separate cdrw burner.;)

Some great, easy to understand info from you guys here, for a complete novice.
Cheers fellas.

I'm taking notice of what all of you have to say and looking at all the links you are giving.

It looks like when I get my pennies together I will probably go for the Pioneer, all you guys seem to rate it highly.

Could any of you guys point me in the right direction regarding the best programs etc that I'd need to get hold of .

Cheers all........
