Virus - What to do???

I'm running F-secure (I think 5.41) Anti-Virus on XP and all my virus def's are up to date, but it doesn't detect anything.

I get random pop-ups even when I'm just reading something and not actively searching the internet. Then when I use google to search for something an alternate search engine pops up that shouldn't.

Any ideas which virus this might be and if so how to go about getting it off of my machine?

it sounds like a trojan has been installed, if you can remeber exactly when it started to happen try restoring your machine back to a prior date.hope i am right

this may or may not be windows messenger service

Finally got it figured out... Updated Ad-Aware, Downloaded Spybot, and used another cleaner that seems to have cleared my system of any problems. I also disabled the messenger service as advised! Thanks for the responses!
