using TPMGEnc

hey peeps.
i have a avi film on my hard drive i have been using TMPGEnc to convert my avi's to mpeg they all work fine but sometimes the avi picture is fine but when i go to convert some films theres no picture when it converts? but there is a picture if i want to watch the avi on my comp.
eg. master and commander avi = fine
master and commander mpeg = no picture?
any know what im doing wrong?

Probably due to some kind of problem with codecs.

What video codec does the AVI use? Also have you been playing round with the VFAPI settings or are they on the default?
