Two Firewalls

Is it possibe to run 2 firewalls at the same time? Norton 2003 & Sygate Pro 5.0.
Is there a benefit to this, or do they both do the same thing.

I am totally new to firewalls so please give pros and cons for me.

Thankyou

2 firewalls will most likely lead to conflicts. So before you try this (that is, IF you dare to try it) make sure the 2 firewalls will cooperate with each other. It's not easy and you must consult the internet before any possible testing.

One things for sure...Norton 2003 & Sygate Pro 5.0 will not cooperate. In fact, Norton and any other firewall are going to be a headache. Norton's firewalls are notorious for system conflicts with other proggies.

However, a good hardware firewall and good software firewall WILL cooperate. This kind of 2 firewall system is the ideal way to go.

lookNstop or SurfSecret also very good firewalls

I have LookNStop Firewall and Dr.Web virusscaninstalled i am very content with it:D

Grtx The Postman:D

Use your strength wisely my son!;)

I use Windows XP firewall is that good?
No its a rather lame firewall compared to whats already available. It can be configured to stop certain incoming packets but lets everything out going pass through, not recomended.

Two software firewalls running at the same thing isnt recommended. However, if you had a simple packet firewall on a router and a software firewall, they can be used together in good effect. Software firewall controlling outgoing, monitoring applications connecting to the net and router packet firewall, dropping all unwanted incoming on certain ports or ips, so they dont reach your computer or LAN.

Dropping a packet at the router is better than blocking a packet at the software firewall. Dropping silently drops a packet (sending to a null port) gives no response to sender. While a block (or deny) in *some* cases can be acknowledged, the sender will know it was blocked (intentionally).

Thankyou for the very fast and VERY informative posts.

Deffo just gonna stick with Sygate for now.

Thanks

Norton even tells you to disable the XP firewall.

In the main, two firewalls, or two resident antivirus programs, will usually increase overhead, and may conflict - some a lot worse than others.

No harm in running a content blocker such as proxomitron with a firewall, -except you have to watch out for the "GOTCHA".

If you use a "local proxy" such as proxomitron (which is allowed out by the firewall) and have a default "loopback rule" in the firewall, then ANY application can make outgoing HTTP connections looped through the local proxy.

If you use a local proxy and a firewall, you MUST find and disable any systemwide loopback rule.
