To the Greeks in the forum

To the Greeks (or Greece visitors) in the forum

I know there its more than one greek here, and I think you all can help me.
I have decided to visit for first time Greece, next year in the summer (must probably july). Its going to be me, my wife and I think to take my mother also with us. I have some magazines and have been in some travel agencies, but I would love to hear directly from persons that know or live there about what are the best places for have an unforgetable trip.
We like a lot of beautyful beaches, and resorts that have very complete installations for doing lots of things, but also would like to see monuments, and history tours (I love greek mitology, its amazing!). I plan to stay 3 weeks, and I think the best could be to visit various places, not staying only in one.
A crouseship is out of my echonomical range at the moment, but Greece is not so expensive traveling from here.

I apreciate recommendations about places, hotels, and activities that you think could be the best.

Thanks a lot my friends.

Nobody? Mmmm... sad. Maybe people don't want to discuss in public where they are from. But don't need to be a Greek citizen who helps me, anyone can simply say: "I have been there :))
Anyway, we all know that there are some known and very handy greeks here. Maybe one of them could give me a hand on this one? If you like just PM me.

Thanks again.

Depends on where exactly u wanna go, North or South Greece? to the Islands? Crete?
As i live in Thessaloniki (North Greece) i suggest u to visit Halkidiki beaches.
PS: where are u from?

I am living actually in Norway.
So I must decide north or south?... mmmhhh... I really don't have any idea. Have heard that the Islands are a paradise, but that is the bigest reference that I have. I would take in account the Halkidiki advice. Thanks!

just remember not to take your laptop, pda, gameboy or mobile phone with you as they are all illegal in greece at the moment untill someone explains to their lawmakers that you can use these devices for things other than gambling.

This law has been overturned (finally God showed his merciful side to us) so now you are free to play all those diabolical games (CounterStrike? You shall burn in hell for mentioning that. It is the most vile form of gambling ever devised) in whichever guise you want (mobile, PDA, PC etc).
As to the main subject it depends: are you a sea or a mainland person? There is plenty of both here. A good compromise would then be Crete, the biggest island in Greece. It has nice beaches and beautiful mainland. It also has the Samaria gorge, one of the few Greek national parks (for lack of a better word) here.

i have to agree..the area near chania is one of the most beautifull areas on creta. Don´t miss the beach of elafonissi

Thanks a lot to all that have posted. I think Creta is taking pole position for a very good stop point. I can see if its possible to mix it with other place, or places. For what I can read Athen has not so much to see ah?
Master: Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly do you mean with "Please don´t forget that greece isn´t spain...thank god for this ."

Hey mate, how come you know stuff like that? Sure, it's all bloody stupid but hey, they try to ban smoking as well. We also give ticket to jay-walkers. Please give all the details of our country next time. :D

sadly its back :( the higher court overturned the decision that the law was unconstitutional

So now they are banned again :(

The Greek gaming tragedy is fast sliding into farce.

Last week a Greek judge threw out a case against two cybercafe owners from Thessaloniki, ruling that a law banning computer games was unconstitutional.

Had they been found guilty, the two proprietors and an employee could have faced a three month jail sentence and fines of about E5,000 each, along with the loss of their business licences.

The game-banning law was introduced to crack down on Internet gambling. Trouble is, this sledgehammer-to-crack-a-nut legislation also made it illegal to play computer games in public.

So the judge's decision to throw out the case appeared to be a return to good old-fashioned common sense. Not so. Yesterday, an appeals court overturned the decision and ordered a retrial.

According to Ananova no trial has been set yet. The farce continues.
OH DEAR :(

Still greece is still such a wonderful country i suppose its worth going without any games just to see the beauty and the history of the place (but how the heck do they plan on running the olympics without computers?)

if you truely get away from it all but not have to travel far from Athens for it, i would recommend a island by the name of idra (i think is also call hyrda). It's a small island about 2hrs away from Athens via hyrdofoil (the "flying dolphin") and it is the best place to go to absolute unwind. There is no traffic as there are virtually no cars on the island (i do remember a council truck) and all travel around the island is done by taxi boat.

For some great pictures check out the attached link.

Thanks to everybody that have aported to the live of this thread. I have been asking here in some travel companies and they say that lots of people go to Santorini (or Santorino) and from there they travel between some islands. We have decided that we want to stay 15 days and that we like to visit several places, not only staying in one place, I think it could be possible to visit 4 or 3 places in 15 days (staying from 3 to 4 days in each, deppending on the things that it has to offer. Starting from this point I am looking on the internet information about different places and what they have to offer. As I said before my main target will be beautifull beaches (due that there is not possible to go to the beach here where I live, its too cold all the year) and interesting places (historical monnuments to visit). I think for this last one Athen is a must go places isn't it? I am really still very unsure to which are going to be the places, I have not had so much time to dedicate at looking for info.
Thanks a lot for all the help!
