everything i try and load i get a error saying file is unsupported, why is this?

Probably because its un-supported 
A bit more info would help, like what are you trying to load in, is it an AVI, MPEG1, MPEG2, etc. what ?
If its an AVI/DivX then please report what GSPOT says about the file.
