Thrashing Sounds

When I record audio cd's, I am getting a strange Thrashing sound playing in the background.. It normally starts around half way through the disc. I have tried cleaning the discs and the drive but makes no difference..

I am running: -

Ricoh MP9120a with latest firmware
Windows Xp home
Athlon Xp 1800
512 DDR Ram
Maxtor 60gig 7200rpm
Soundblaster Plat 5.1

Please help

is the audio CD you are copying from, a new release?
The music industry released onto the market a heap of new releases that are now carrying the new anti-copy protection (don't ask what it is, cause i don't know what it is called).

The protection causes problems with play back which introduces a wide variety of sounds and distortions, i think this is maybe what you are hearing.

I have heard some that produce a crackling and popping sound, i have also heard one that produces sounds like a scratched recording.

I know that the protection released CD's have been around for some 12 months now (in my country they released 200,000 approx 8 months ago).

I hope (in a nice way) that this is the cause of your problem and not your system or copier.
Maybe someone else may have some other ideas to share with you.

Thrashing

I have tried nero, cdrwin, feurio and blindread/write.. All the same.. The thrashing sound is not in the same place every time..

It only happens when I copy audio cd to blank cd.. Encoding cd to mp3 is fine.. I have not installed any aspi layer.. I am fairly new to this so rely on experts yourself for advice..

Hello,

i would try to reduce the ripping speed and try to burn with a slower speed.
Perhaps another cdr brand will solve the problem.

I think you aren´t playing Wolfenstein while you are ripping ?

Try using standard 650Mb/74mins media instead, buddy. I've got this problem with my SONY CD Walkman too. As you know, the "gaps" between "tracks" on a 74min disc is 1.56um while on a 80min disc is 1.52um... this will create difficulties/incompatibilities with certain drives. Normally the "phek phek phek phek..." thingy will start at around track 9 to 10 and onwards, and getting worse.

This is also a symptom of an aging writer as the laser strength is no longer strong enough to write the pits correctly. Well at least after I changed to a new writer both sizes of the discs worked ^_^
