Terratec DMX 6fire 24/96 -- is this a great sound card?

I'm thinking of buying a sound card strictly for music (i.e., not for gaming). Naturally, I want something that excels in playing music. Is the Terratec a great card for this? Some say the M-Audio Revolution 7.1 is the way to go. Give me some feedback on what you know about these cards please.

Well,Terratec is making a great cards usually.....Didnt check that one...I do have a revolution7.1......It is ok for music..Do not know for games though as i dont play them......??

I'm with zver here... M-Audio Revolution is a terrific audiophile soundcard, which comes at a budget price (about 90 bucks), and has cpecs which have still to be matched by soundcards costing 3X as much.
If you want a REAL audiophile soundcard though, you should start from my current pride (Echo Mia) which can be found for around 180$, and regarding output quality it beats pro cards costing 3X as much with relative ease.
Notice though that M-Audio Revolution is a 7+1 sondcard, and Echo Mia is just an ordinary stereo card...

i got the terratec dmx 6fire 24/96 and i love it ...
digital in and out (opt+coax) working fine together with my DD, DTS receiver.
hardware vu meters for all inputs, all gainable up to 18db, .......
features are amazing, sound is great (read several tests about it) and no probs so far
a friend of mine got it too, doing some cd authoring with cool edit pro. works like a charm ...
perhaps a little too much for just playing music

Just to add to this.........Dont know for other cards..But i got a standalone dvd player and standalone dd decoder...And simply i couldnt hear a difference in sound betwween standalone and my dvd reader from pc :) ..Sound quality was realy great thry spdif to my dd decoder(5.1+sub......Do not know for 7.1 as i do not have connected those mids(left&right)).......Also be sure that hardware is supported for your software dvd player...Like revolutiuon is for windvd and power dvd....... :) Couse often before i downloaded movies from p2p and i had to redecode.........Now,just thry tv out and spdif-out==done :) ..And for last....I do like my soundcard, but i had a chance to try echomia.....It is a outstanding card.......So if you dont watch movies and dont need dd>>should be your way to go...Couse you can find it on ebay for 90$ and up for used one...........Just be carefull what youre getting???

I'm not as versed in this as I should be so I have to ask a newbie question: The Echo Mia would not support surround sound whereas the M-Audio Revolution would?

What he meant is(my guess)..Echo is a regular stereo card( but superb quality stereo)...It will produce a stereo output...M-audio""revolution7.1"""will produce stereo output as well but also it will produce a bit more...Like for example 5.1 surround,5.1dd,7.1 digital.....Also that sensaura game mod..trs true surround ..few more too... :) Also it is also presetted for some common types of """"""pc sound systems"""""like cresative, altec lansing, moonsoon, harmon kardon,klipsch.......Like you can choose that in a drop-down menu...Also,as i said im a my above post...If you watch some dvd it will produce a output like it is on dvd.......While echo will play out just stereo part of the sounf.....To make it simple--You wouldnt hear nothing except main left-right........Well,if you do have a surround receiver or amp you could get some ""fake surround"""from that stereo sound, and with m-audio you will get all those 7+sub.......... :) I will attach a shot so you can see it what i mean......Like yoyu can choose what you want....

The M-Audio Revolution is a consumer level audio card (like an Audigy but with great quality) and the Echo Mia is a Pro level card and is intended for musicians if you intend to make music by your own then you should consider a Pro level card and if you still want to have sorround then check the Delta 24/96 Audiophile from M-Audio it has everything you need to make music and offers 5.1 output trough SPDIF
