You can use Vidomi to convert MPEG2 (SVCD) to AVI in an almost 1 step operation. Just follow the DVD to AVI tutorial but load the MPEG file in instead.
Important though to extract the MPG file off the CD with Isobuster first as its not a true MPG while on the CD, the link given above by weboneando will tell you how to do this.
