Survey -- How long does it take you to:

Until divx standalones arrive (should be around xmas hopefully) divx is just a useful way to compress movies for the internet.
Once downloaded they get converted to (s)vcd.
If u watch only on your pc then they are fine.
Not much trade in divx at the moment but dont chuck em away as there will be soon!

I prefer SVCD

I'm not in the trade business, so I definatly prefer SVCD. Technology is always growing, and I look for the trade business to eventually turn to SVCD reason being there will be more SVCD DVD compliant players. I've done 1 VCD and after seeing the results, I wasn't impressed becuase I was used to viewing SVCD.

Divx will give you better quality than svcd and on 1 disc.
Thats if its done correctly and the movie is not over long.
The first victims will be dvd recorders I think , unless prices drop drastically.

Yes of course DivX is a lot better than SVCD or VCD if its made properly. And when the AVI playing DVDPlayers come out this Xmas, all hee will break loose as none of the avi's made with DivX3 and even possibly DivX4 will play on them, so then everyone will have to convert to DivX5 eventually. I just got given a dozen new release DVD rips in DivX format and all but 2 or 3 were DivX3 format, so good old DivX3 is still being used today as the preferred codec by many.

divx needs standardising anyway.
Too many different audio types especially.
Hope they choose the right standard. Its not a coincidence that a lot of top quality divx out there use divx3.
Could end up with the same problems people have having with svcd.
The player supports them as long as .........................!

With all your guys reply SVCDs sounds alot better than VCDs, i personally havn't see SVCD in action, cause as i said eaier takes me bloody long time to convert
so maybe now i'll try converting come of the specials in a dvd to SVCD and VCD just to compare the quality
but there is still the problem of conversion time, i'm sharing a computer with one of my family members whos always on the computer
so right now DVD-SVCD is no no for me :(

DVD 2 SVCD using cce 3pass vbr 4-5 hrs for a 1.5-2hour film
DVD 2 AVI using vidomi & divx5.02pro 2pass vbr(with bitrate set to 10000mbps)2.7-3.0 hrs for a 1.5-2hour film

Having done both encodes on 13ghosts i've concluded i get better results encoding to avi with vidomi than to svcd with cce

.avi should give u slightly better results than svcd.
However, your standalone wont play them yet (divx) and avi via tv-out cannot compare with svcd via your stanalone.
The new dvd+divx players on the way should solve this.
But then again they may suck big time.
I wait with interest!
For the PC only user, then divx is the best.

On My 1.7ghz, useing CCE to encode a 2 hour movie from DVD to SVCD useing AVI synth takes about 2.5 hours, but encodeing VCD Resolutions it takes less than 1 hour...

SVCD 3-5 HRS
DONT BOTHER DOING VCD SO CANT REPLY TO THIS
I USE DVDX v 2.0 for my conversion

Dvdx i have found to be the an excellent program and gives an excellent return as yet it has never let me down

Using DVDx 1.6
version 2.0 won't work with LSX-Mpeg for Adobe Premiere 2.01.
can't figure out why....
