Survey -- How long does it take you to:

Hi!
Just a quick survey "How long does it take you to convert a DVD to (S)VCD / DIVX " and please list your computer spec as well. Thanks
The reason i'm doing this is because my computer takes ages to do a DVD conversion so i wanna know what others take.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll start off

10 hours for a DVD to VCD
20+ hours for a DVD to SVCD
12 hours for a DVD to DIVX

My Computer spec is ---
*CPU = Pentium 3 800mhz
*RAM = 512 SD
*HD = 20GB @ 7200RPM

And you ???

like to know what software you are useing also

as times vary from soft to soft

it would be nice if someone could write a how to
for script writeing for cce as this is a very popular
soft

what you can and cant encode
example (can you encode mpeg1, video/audio together
to mpeg2 with a .avs script with cce to put on a dvd.

Sorry i didn't know there was a thread similar to mine
i'm just really new to this community
so excuse to my stupidity

it's alright Golden. At least you admitted your error.
The other one was a little old and unless you looked specifically for it (using the search button) you might not have found it.

Next time you will know to search a little harder though lol.
Anyhow, welcome to the forum and hopefully enjoy your stay here.

Yes i've learned my lesson today
thanks shadoe_phantom

btw which CPU is good for this kind of dirty work -=P4=- or -=AMD XP=-

Can I answer anyway:D

for dvd to divx
a two hour movie takes 4 1/2 hours using gknot and divx 5.02 on two pass.

I have an AMD 1GHz
win2k sp3
384MB pc133
46GB 7200 hd
12x creative dvd

I do dvd 2 vcd (tmpgenc) 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
DVD2SVCD 6 to 8 hours.
Duro 1.2

I do vcd for the trade and svcd for myself and trade.

Golden, that's just the way he is.
For myself I prefer VCDs over SVCDs.
Reason being, I can make them look really good and only takes me 2 CDs as opposed to 3 or 4 CDs.

For me it isn't worth going through the extra CDs (might as well buy a pirated or original DVD). For others, they don't mind switching CDs every 30-40minutes.

The way I see it, is you have to way convenience and cost over something you are getting for free or cheap anyways.
VCD if done properly will give you quality better than VHS and about 23% lower or so from DVD. SVCD is about 15% lower or so.
The ratio isn't enough for me to spend for the extra CD or 2 (especially when I can get pirated DVDs here for under $4USD* though I get mine for under $2USD).

As Shadoe said, its all in what you want to rip the dvd for in the first place. If your ripping to trade, then VCD is the way to go as less CD's involved and can be done is less time. If you think VHS quality is good, then VCD done properly is even a bit better so stay with it.

But if you rip a movie for yourself only and want the best quality to watch on your TV, and ripping time is not important, then SVCD is the way to go. This is also personally what I do. I ripped a few VCD's last month just to test out a new DVD to VCD tutorial I will be posting shortly.

@aimunregistrd, VBR v's CBR, have a read of the tutorial I updated it a couple of weeks back. CBR can be equal quality to VBR sometimes, but most of the time its not or if a normal VBR encode for a particular movie was going to be, say, 2 CD's long, then that would need to be increased to 3 CD's to get same quality out of CBR encode of the same movie done at VBR.

Why aren't you guys using divx? I get way better quality with my one cd dvd-divx rips than with vcd rips and svcd just takes up way too many cds.

Is it because you want to watch it on your regular tv?
