Something wrong with PX-708A?

I have purchased this drive on initial reviews, which were quite good. The drive was highly recommended at numerous sites.

It seems now that a problem is rearing it's ugly head.Bad write quality, cdr&dvdr is a common problem. Some of the drives just quit reading, and,or writing,or error out.I can understand user problems might be part of the problem, but the amount of returned drives seems suspect.

I wish somebody from Plextor would respond to this.Is it a firmware problem,or defective drives?

hey woody ! didn't mom ? ever tell you ! Believe in half of what you see... and nothing of what you read.....sorry to hear of your misfortune and misinformatiom. this probably costed you a pretty good penny...so how long before a total refund is due ? or they gonna give you a better one for the same cost. :(

I'm actually burning happily away.I had to upgrade to firmware 1.04 for good results.I'm quite concerned about what I've been reading.Bad quality/unreadable discs, and hardware failures seem quite common.I find it hard to believe that so many people don't know how to configure, and burn with it.

I realize that burning at 8X to 4X certified discs can only be done on recommended media.Just looking for answers. ;)

thats why your the man to go to woody......... :p
LOL!Yeah... :D

The thing with forums is that people come for help with problems. So that's what we see instead. Not many will post if the writer is working well for them.

I have a px-708a and have not had any problems (so far). I got it as a replacement for a pioneer 105 (the laser degraded in under 1 year and would not burn @ x4). I've burned one disc at x8 on ritek mauve overprint media and found it played perfect in the PS2.

@woody. Is flashing the firmware easy on the plex?

Yep.. you flash from the Windows environment.Usual precautions are..No disc in the drive, disable DMA,most importantly don't interrupt the flashing, and reboot.Enable DMA after upgrade.Latest release is 1.04. ;)

@ woody and any other PLEXTOR drive owners either cdrw /dvdrw i suggest emailing them with a polite question if your drive is problematic try to give as much info as possible :)

they are very good with customer support :)

my 24/10/40a died just into the 1st part of my 2 year warrenty and they picked up and replaced in 1 week :D

meantime i had a few nice regular communications with a tech support guy at PLEXTOR.be VIA EMAIL :)

If your not happy or got a problem with plextor im sure they will only be too glad to help :)

Sure their CDRWS cost a lot more but i got a 2 yr warrenty that held out and got me a FREE replacement in less than one week :)

yep flashing plextor is less hazardous as woody says its windows based :)

glad u got sorted btw woody :)

Yep...they have excellent support. There seems to be one BIG bug with PX-708A.Some users have the cdr(w) portion of the drive die.If it stops recognizing/writing cdr(w) return it. ;)
