Smart and friendly 1204

Does anyone know if my recorder can burn 99mi cd´s.
Because nero (5.5.10) recognises the cd-r as 139mb cd.
Do i have to change somethign in nero configuration or is just that my recorder doesn´t recognize 99min cd´s. Thanks a lot.
Matias.

So if that's the TEAC CDR-55S based model - 4012, 12 read, 4x write, no rewrite.....

http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/cd_cd-r99.shtml

A CD-R 55S with firmware better than 1.0Q, should do 92:59

http://www.cdr.cz/rekordery/smart/4x12speedwriter4012.htm - That doesn't look like an external, and their firmare numbering cycle is different (but the format is the same)

If that's right, then 6.0n is the latest firmware

And if you have a SOLID identification - this describes how to convert to the TEAC base model, to take advantage of later firmware (this is from a traxdata!)

And the latest for the TEAC

BE **VERY** sure before attampting a reflash, and perhaps take a wander arounf firmware-flash forums - if they don't know, nobody does!

i´m not really sure about doing it, because i can loose the recorder isn´t it???, so thanks anyway.
Anyway if i do it would not be able to burn 99 min cd´s isn´t it???
Thanks a Lot.

Use Nero Infotool, check the drive name, firmware version, and CD-RW capability.... Converting ID is a bit risky, but loading the latest available matched firmware, if not already at that level, should be relatively safe (but still a risk if the power goes during flash)

If it's the drive I think it is, I would actually expect it to identify as:

SAF CD-R4012
with a firmware of 6.0 (followed by a letter)
- and the procedure and naming also points solidly to it being a rebranded TEAC CD-R55S

If I've got that identity right, then a later SAF firmware MIGHT give it 99min capability, while converting it to a TEAC CD-R55S WILL give it the 92:59 limit indicated for that drive.

As you rightly suspect, MORE VERIFICATION IS NEEDED, as a bad flash will kill the drive.

Yes it identifies as SAF 4012, and its firmware is 6.0n
I looked at teac R55S and it´s indenticall except that mine is external(SCSI).What do you recomend me??? i downloaded R55S10R01.EXE file, is that ok?????, should i flash it with teac´s firmware????. What´s that about converting to teac model???

Thanks a lot

You cannot use the current Windows flash to make the conversion.

To do that, you need the DOS updater - eg. the archived 1.0g, or the ripped 1.0l and the DOS updater (SCSI_FLW - the DOS update procedure is described for the Smart and Friendly)

I stronly advise a good wander around the firmware-flash and CDFREAKS forums as well - the two best places for upgraders.

This is NOT the drive that I'm an expert on, but having had to firmware replace a different drive (with parallels at Smart and Friendly), I tracked most of the models there, as they are all reckoned to be purely badge-engineered rebrands with no component variation.

When this forum was "different", I carefully avoided tying my identity here to anything else.... - I'll PM you with my site, and remind you - don't just take my word for it on this drive, as it's NOT the one I've done it to!
