Slow DVD reading/burning

My father in law bought a Plextor 708A DVD drive about 4 months ago and has worked perfectly until about a week ago. Its now taking over an hour to burn an image & Video_TS/Audio_TS files and just as long to create an image. He was using DVD Shrink to back up a DVD this evening and it was taking 1 1/2 hours rather than the usual 20 - 30 mins! Does anybody know what this could be down to?

check if DMA is still enabled: http://www.dvdrbase.com/showthread.php?t=32137
if it's still enabled remove the whole IDE controller in device manager, reboot, let the controller re-detect while restarting; re-enable DMA, reboot again; try burning again;
