Ricoh MP5240a

Hi...

Went to the local swap meet (markets) looking for a LITEON LDW-401s, couldn't find any. However I noticed they had really keen prices on the Ricoh MP5240a drive... ended up buying one for AUS$ 255.

Unpacked it and Liteon dvd reader and tried a few copies on cheap dvd-rw media (digimedia). Backed up a Movie (one I own), and burned data files no problems at all... this drive sure seems promising!

Anyone else got one of these? if so are there any media I shouldn't use? or any tips I should know about?

So far this looks like a great drive!

Thanks...

Lutz

Man... You got lucky... I got a MP5240A a few days ago, misburned 3dvd's already!!
I've tried DVDcopy (the software included) Clonedvd and Nero 6. But nothing worked. Even my burner cant read the copy of the movie..
I tried to read the dvd (also a copy) en build an iso file, after that i burnt it on a new dvd and after burning the dvd disc looks pretty full when you look on the disc, but when i put it back in the writer to try and look at the movie, windows says the disc is empty???????

How can it be????

Three things that could be wrong.

1. you are trying to copy dvd movies that are copy protected. For this you need to use a program like "dvdxcopyxpress" or "anydvd" combined with "clonedvd". If you use clonedvd alone, it will not copy commercial dvd movies, unless you are lucky enough to find one without copy protection. Usually though, the program will abort rather than make a coaster.

2. Are you using the correct media? The Ricoh is a "+" format only. I dont think the burner will even attempt a "-" format disk though. Also maybe the media you have is crap.... try another brand maybe, I used RW for a while till i was confident in burning.

3. Your burner is broken, you are the first person I have heard of with a dud. Sooner or later someones gotta get a dud.

Good luck...

About the 3 things:

1. Cant be, i've tried clonedvd together with anydvd on the background. Also tried dvd copy x xpress. Neither didnt work.

2. This could it, the media i have are mostly princo (dvd-r) (the things i want to copy) and the dvd's i want to burn to are brandless. But cant i use the dvd rom player to read dvd-r?? It is a Liteon.
I also tried to read a thatswrite dvd, and that one went very well. But on the princo it just hangs at a certain point.. Buying a new dvd writer is the sollution??

3. I hope im not the one... ;)

Mr.Doom I think you should try media like Ritek....datasafe 4X ritek dye are good...I know it's not helping you since you've going out your way to buy clonedvd anydvd and the likes of. But try the freeware listed in this thread Look it's also possible that your drive may need a firmware update to cope with that media your using the last firmware update for this drive was dated 2003/08/25 you find it here if you dont know your firmware you can use Smartburn to find out found on the same site or maybe listed in your burning app's.

Thx Rastabt for the help.
I will try all the freeware you've listed. i'm very grateful for that!
But today i went back to the place where i've bought the writer and gave it back to them and switched it for an LG DVD +/- rewriter. At the moment i'm trying to copy a dvd and it looks promising. So we'll see whats happening.. ;) (i'm burning it on a RW DVD, so it can always be erased.. :D )

I have also just got an MP5240a and have similar problems.

I have a DVD+RW from my Philips DVDR75 with a TV recording. I use the DVD Copy software to copy an image to hard drive and then the same again to burn it to DVD+R (to save the film). The film however plays jerkily and skips and the DVD+R will not be recognised by the DVD burner that burnt it!

Any ideas gratefully appreciated - I'm about to take it back but it mean dis-assembling the PC - again!
