Questions Re.: DVD Ripping & Burning

I am quite new to the DVD Ripping and handling the subsequent files.

Is there a way to take the data from a DVD disc to be stored on the system?

Is there a way to burn the aforementioned files to a CDR and have them play in a home theater DVD player, without damaging the player?

I have heard of a way to rip the DVDs without having massive amounts of HDD space available and less than a weeks worth of work?

I know it can be done, I just have not found the documentaion to teach myself the process.

If you are awair of this proceedure just direct me to the resources and I will teach myself, thereby not filling the forum with senceless postings.
