question about anonymous emailers

how is it possible for someone to send an email to you from another email account of yours? that just blows my mind.

There's this person that did just that, sending offensive emails to me from another email account of mine; my question is if it's possible to trace back to him so he knows that i know what his scheme is; in the header, i saw the ip address as well as the smtp address, but i don't know how to trace it to an email account of his.

Does anyone know?

there are some progs that do anonymous mailing, there you can enter any email adress you want that appears then in the from field. but to use these progs you always need a anonymous smtp server and all these in the lists i got with such progs weren't working.
you can't get that easily from the ip to a mail account, the only thing you can do is to get out his provider but i don't think they give out their users information that easily, perhaps you need to do that judically.
