Q? on format of Home DVD

Hi Guys,
I'm wondering if someone can help.

When I buy a Home DVD player, what DVD format is that? I mean all the DVD's that you can get of movies, what format? DVD-R, DVD-W???

I'm trying to figure out what standard of DVD writer I should get. I'd like to keep them all compatible somewhat.

Players All the same format

Burners pioneer 105 or the Sony seem favourites

So do you mean that all the home players will be able to play all DVD's that I burn with any of the writers that are available?

Not quite But MOST standalone players do play copy/backup DVDr's

But its a crazy game because some media are not up to the task
it boils down to "suck it & see"

just as an example I had some 1x DVD-R that played in one of my standalones but not the other!!

Yeah, it is confusing. I've never been able to figure out just what standard the Hollywood DVD's are burned in. Like before they had all these stupid standards, what did they use?
