problems with sound playing divx/avi files

It seems that whenever i play a avi file that has VBR audio i get a lot of crackling sounds whenever the the audio gets louder during the film - does anyone know what the problem could be. The crackling sounds are not apparent with avi files with CBR audio though.

I have (had) lots of AVI's with VBR and normal MP3 tracks but I must admit I never play them through on the PC. I just convert them to VCD and delete the AVI. The VCD's dont seam to have any problems with audio.

Try a different AVI player, like WinDVD just about plays everything very well. Windows Media Player plays everything crappy IMHO.
