Problems With Acrobat Reader

I have Acrobat reader 5.1 (recently upgraded from 5.0) and for some reason it won't work! I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it. and I tried to install an older version. Nothing can make the program work. when i click on the icon, the program splash screen opens up but not the program.
Can anybody please help me with this problem?

If upgrading Acroread you MUST first uninstall old version- else it won't work.
Uninstall all existing versions and perform a system cleanup via something, eg JV16. It may work.
