Problems Ripping dvd's

If you are going for a LiteOn drive then try to get the 166.

I have the 163 and the 166 and i thought that the 163 is the better drive.

The latest fw-update was a big improvement for my 166.

It´s the better ripper now.

Dvd´s which were shown as a bad copy with nero dvd-speed and the 163 are perfect with the 166 now

So the error correction of the 166 must be better too.

Are the DVDs you are having problems with the same Region as your drive, or is your DVD burner region-free?
If you are ripping PAL on an NTSC or vise-versa, you either need to find an RPC-1/RCE-Free firmware, or use DVD-Region Killer or equivalent to disable BOTH the Region AND the RCE checking.

@ HuntbyNight,

Sorry to just jump into the middle of this thread but after re-reading all the thread comments I believe the problem you are experiencing with only some certain DVD’s not to play properly and unable to be “ripped” is caused by these particular DVD’s to be dirty and/or scratched DVD.

You need to thoroughly clean the offending DVD with warm soapy water. Then thoroughly inspect the DVD with a magnifying glass for any evidence of scratches. If any suspect areas are located lightly polish the area with Nevr-Dull(h**p://www.nevrdull.com) or Braso (h**p://www.stanleylondon.com/brasso.htm). If you are unable to locate these metal polishes you can attempt to clean the scratched areas with toothpaste or automotive buffing compound.

After thoroughly cleaning the DVD and removing any scratches your problematic DVD’s should be able to play properly and be “ripped’ properly.

@ COASTER are you sure you read the whole thread here !? blane made this comment in the 1st page of this thread !?

Welcome HuntbyNight to the forum. Are your dvd's clean? Just use a tissue and a little alcohol. Is your drive clean? A cd head cleaner should take care of that. And are you multi-tasking while your trying to rip the dvd? Try to let the computer just work on it's own during the rip. Have you updated the firmware for the drive?

Hmm, cleaning the DVD's didn't seem to help.
 ?!?

All of the DVD's that are giving me trouble are Region free. Also, I highly doubt that the problem is because of a dirty disc because the problem starts right where a chapter change would occur. The DVD's look perfectly fine and I've tried cleaning them with alcohol just to make sure. Another thing I've found is that if I use SmartRipper while playing the DVD, at certain points it will say one file is unlocked, but at other times still locked...although I still can't rip them no matter what point it is at.

@ VIPER_1069,

Yes, I read Blane and HuntbyNight comments and responses but nowhere in this thread was there a statement made to thoroughly inspect for scratched DVD and how to repair if scratches were found.

Problems caused by surfaced scratches of a DVD are more of a problem than with a CD because the data tracks are closer together on a DVD than on a CD. Even a very small scratch that would not normally cause a problem on a CD can cause a problem on a DVD similar to what HuntbyNight is experiencing.

The point of my posting was for HuntbyNight to thoroughly inspect for scratches and if found how to repair.

Just trying to help forum HuntbyNigh out with his problem from my personal experiences I have had with problematic DVDs.

Ok! I tried out the Lite-on LTD166 and the results were excellent! All the spots that I had trouble with before didn't cause a problem with the Lite-on. The ONLY problem I've had is with the extra Interviews at the end of the Escaflowne DVD. I get a CIRC Unrecovered error...which is a first. But, I didn't care for those interviews anyway. Thanks again everyone for all the help and recommending this Lite-on drive!

Well, I just tried reading some DVD+RW backups I made and I found out that the Lite-on drive can't read them...which is very disappointing. I guess I'll live...

Hey, HuntbyNight here...well...I would be at least. I had to create this name because of some login problems. When they updated the forum it got rid of the login cookie...and I forgot my pass. So, I reset the password...but I never got the e-mail back telling me what it was. Two days later and I still don't have it. If some Admin or something could get my pass to me...that would be great.

About my DVD-burner being able to read the DVD+RW discs...it can.

Edit: I see my temp name was replaced with HuntbyNight...so if you want the first part of this post to make sense, use your imagination and pretend my name for this post is BlahBlah or something.

You are now HuntbyNight again..your new password you just created should work.If not..just PM me and I'll fix it. ;)

The Poacher was suggesting you use your Dvd writer for reading dvdrw's.

Alright! I can finally log back in! For some reason even with a correct password it would still say it was wrong. But, after deleting all my cookies it seems the problem is fixed.

Edit: The comment I had came off more rude then funny. Great how that happens sometimes.
