Problem with MP3 in XP

anyone can help me, please jump in.
Here is my problem

[Before:] I play MP3 under Windows xp, is fine, no scratch, no glitch nor buzz nor skip nor anything. At that time, i didn't install Norton Antivirus 2002

[Now:] When i play MP3 under windows xp, there is a skip just like when u listen to CD music and there is skip part or scratch, and it's really piss me off. At this time, i installed the Norton Antivirus 2002.

I'm running dual boot system, and i switched back to ME, it works fine, no skip nor anything. It seems like there is another programs that share the port or is running background that take away the memory.

I check the Task Manager, i saw the CPU usage is goes up to 65-70%. Why is taking so much CPU to listen to MP3?

there are 2 problems.
Firstly do as I did & make sure Nav isn't running in the background at all. All you ever need a virus scanner for, is whenever you download or install anything new (so you can manually check things as needed).

Secondly I have found problems when running dual boot systems with winXP.
It doesn't seem to allocate sectors properly when there is a dual boot setup in winXP. I couldn't pinpoint the exact cause or where it does this, but there was a folder I had that you couldn't gain access to while the dual-boot was on. Once you turn it off it would open.
Guess you'll just have to do your own testing for things to see which works out best.
Try the first suggestion (in the settings/configurations option for NAV) & also you may still need to ctrl+alt+delete to shut down Nav32 types still operating in the background.

NAV2002 is a great virus scanner (probs the best or 2nd best in my opinion), but it does like to hog resources when left at default settings. Choke the sucker & let it know you are the master =)

I did close the NAW32...exe thing, but the problem still occur.

I forgot to mention one thing that, after i reformat my computer and installed dual systems. I listen to MP3 on XP, the problem is just same now, skip. I noticed that i didn't install Norton Antivirus 2002 at that point yet.

It's really piss me off now... I just don't understand.... It seems like i'm listening to CD that has no antishock...

Anyone else has comment or suggestion?

It's your Audigy bud!

Audigy's are notorious (and well documented) for this crackling and popping in WinXP. I fixed it by isolating the device on its own IRQ (IRQ 12 to be specific) and a PCI slot that does not share a great deal of activity. No problems ever since and yes I was (until recently) using NAV 2002.

well, ur answer is very logical. Why i haven't tthought about it. I shoud have known it. But, i tried what u told me, the problem is still occur, but less skip this time. I disable one of NEC USB, but there is one left that share the same IRQ "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant system." I know this one, i can't and must not disable.

I have read the link u gave me, it very useful, thanx.

Do you think i should change my PCI card? i might if it still occur.. Finally i can have a big laugh.

Since you already have this card...I would say, let's try and make it work before buying a new one. It's not that the Audigy or the Live are bad cards (they are actually quite good consumer cards), it's that Creative's support of them (and all their products) just plain sucks!

Believe it or not...as much as I defend these cards on this list, you will notice that I don't recommend a new purchase of one (not since XP anyway). Personally, I would buy Turtle Beach card/s. They are simple and work without all the problems in XP. So in this regard...I agree with Pokopiko's assessment posted above. My Audigy was my LAST Creative purchase. I will not put any more money into a company that cares so little for its customers.

Nevertheless, you have one...so let's make it work. First, if you looked at the internal link I gave above...the mouse is a very effective trick. The posting explains it all.

Don't disable items in Windows. This is not as effective as BIOS manipulation, as some devices may still be working despite what Windows says. These items still often take up memory space until you uninstall them completely.

Manipulate in your BIOS, the PCI-IRQ assignments. Most Mobo's do this automatically...go for the manual approach. This is a much more effective way. Look at your Mobo manual. Pay carefull attention to PCI slots that share with on board devices (esp high busmastering items like HD/RAID controllers and AGP). Move those settings and or cards around. I moved all my cards around several times and isolated my PS2 port to IRQ 12. I pulled the PS2 mouse off (in favor of a USB one) and bam...the soundblaster took that IRQ in Windows. It took me a week of carefull manipulation, but it all payed off in the end...no crackling at all any more...even with streaming mp3 radio!

BTW, I only use the drivers on Windows Update and NOT Creatives website. I have heard that Creative's drivers try to do too much and install stuff that you don't need. Creative is notorious for this. These extras IMHO, are part of the cause of your sound crackles. I personally don't need all the extra crap Creative gives you anyways.

Well said dxkim.
Turtle Beach & Hercules are producing some of the best cards with support for all platforms I think. Creative just doesn't have any support at all (much like ATI with capture cards) & has really made this company go down-hill.
My SB Live 5.1 DE is my last creative card also.
