Problem burning good DVDs on Pioneer A04 they skip at the end!

I've been having this problem for a while now. I'll try to give as much information as possible.
-I'm using the Pioneer A04/104 and I'm burning at 2x with a firmware 2x4all upgrade.
-Not sure of the brand name of the media but I know its an off brand because it was cheaper
-I have a friend using same drive and media and he doesnt have this problem. What happens is that I burn a movie (data seems okay if I just backup data files) and the very end of the movie (~10 mins or so) the movie will skip. So I'll have to reburn. It seems a LITTLE better at 1x burning but 2x burning seems to make it skip more frequently. Its kind of hit or miss though, I never know when its going to happen. Now before I burn EVERY TIME I restart my computer and disable my antivirus so nothing is running. I'm using an AMD 2600+ with 512 ram. I've burned probably 300 or more DVDs on this drive. Could it be that it is just getting old? Do you think its definitely the media? I'm just kind of looking for answers. I would like to upgrade soon anyways (once I know the best DL drive to buy) because I'd like a little bit more speed, but I want to make sure I'm not burning coasters all day at 8x. Please give me any advice you can think of. Sorry for making this so long but I wanted to be thorough. Thanks in advance.

Welcome :)
Media. If you make the file size smaller then 4gig it may not happy. But I would just buy better media. I had that drive and I know it likes G03's. But for the price of G03's (if u can find them) I would get G04's.

Thanks for the reply. Here's the info on the discs I'm using from DVD Identifier.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:ONIDTECH]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc Type : [DVD-R]
Manufacturer ID : [ONIDTECH]
Manufacturer Name : [UL TRAN Technology & Service Corp.]
Disc Application Code : [Unrestricted Use : Consumer Purpose]
Recording Speeds : [1x , 2x , 4x] (8x Cannot Be Detected)
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4,489.3MB = 4.38GB (4.71GB)]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now my friend is using this same disc on the same drive and his computer is slower (more RAM and I think a faster hard drive) I was wondering if I should get a faster HDD with a larger cache? like a 10k RPM with 8mb cache. But I wouldnt think it would be necessary. Any other suggestions or a specific brand that might be better? What about a different drive, preferably DL that is less picky with media? Thanks in advance.

Mirror = AN31, ONIDTECH, PRINCO

3RD CLASS MEDIA

Quality can be very questionable, about 50-80% success rate:
LEADDATA or LD01 or LD or LEDA = Lead Data = (-R)(-RW)
RITEKW = Ritek = (-RW)
PRINCO, unbranded TDK = Princo = (-R)(-RW)
ONIDTECH = Unknown OEM = (-R)
MUST = Unknown OEM = (-R)

Well we all know PRINCO are garbage, if you read around the internet you will find that out. :eek: Also when its comes to garbage media you will find that the data on the disc can become corrupt in as little as 6 months. :eek: In other words in as litte as 6 months you can not read the data on the disc. So for a matter of pennys do you want to take the chance that you will not beable to read your data?
I think we should change the name of your post.:rolleyes:
Problem burning Bad Media on Pioneer A04 they skip at the end!

Cheap media is a problem for sure.Errors tend to be revealed at the beginning,and mostly, the end of a disk.PC-Guy gives good advice.Use good media recommended by the drive manufacturer.

If you're upgrading to a Dual layer,the new NEC,Liteon/Sony,BenQ, drives look good .The Pioneer A08 looks okay,but 16X dvd writing is slow due to Zone CLV.

There is a link for a list in this thread.Scroll down the list.Some now burn DL at 4X.

Thanks for the responses. I will definitely pay more for decent media. Can anyone recommend a brand they prefer and a good place to purchase it (in US)? I was getting these discs from eBay but a good etailer would be great. Thanks again for your help everyone.
