printer on home network

Hi is there anyone who can help me please I have networked my desktop pc and my laptop .I have shared internet & shared files working
but I can't get the printer to print. The printer is on my desktop pc
I will need step by step guide as don't know very much on the setup side of things Cheers bjellys

You must first install the printer in the desktop pc and make sure that is working there, then share it, after that install the printer in the laptop as a local printer, then open the properties of the printer and change the port to the adress of the shared printer (the port should be something like this: \\desktop\inkjet , depending on the names given to your pc and printer).

Take note: there are some older models of inkjet printers that won´t work in a network without a printer server, if your printer is a recent model then you shouldn´t have this problem.

thanks

Cheers for the reply it is the printers address that is giving me problems I had it all working on the network until I changed my modem connection from usb to network card.
cheers bjellys

Another slightly more dumplicated way of doing this -- which might ultimately work better if you're still having problems -- is 1) to install the printer as a working local printer on the server computer and then share it. 2) Then on the computer that will access it over the network, install the printer drivers as though it's a local printer (you may have to do this if the remote computer isn't on an NT-based OS). 3) From the remote computer, browse the network until you find the shared printer on the server -- double-click on the printer and windows will ask you if you want to install the printer on the remote. 4.) Say, 'Yeah, baby." and Windows should correctly find the drivers already installed (for the fictitious local printer) and re-apply them to install the networked printer. Voy-lah! as they say on Fraunkay.
